Ice Cream Sandwich Update - worth doing?

Hi,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 mobile phone.

I've heard there is an update available for "Ice Cream Sandwich" (new operating system) but it hasn't been sent to me automatically (I'm on the 3 network).

I think I need to go online myself with the phone plugged into a PC in order to get it. But am just wondering if it is worth having - what are the improvements/benefits? Also, whether downloading it might cause any problems as I'm quite happy with the way things are on the phone at the moment.

Very grateful for any advice as to pros and cons and also if anyone has an idiot-proof guide to getting the upgrade if I should decide to do so.

Many thx.

I've updated my S2 on Talkmobile.

I would say maybe leave it a while, i seem to have a few buggy problems with it and i dont see any great improvement to make it worth doing.

The worst things i find is that the screen seems less receptive than it was, sky go doesn't seem to work, i keep getting repeated texts, my navigon satnav has stopped working.

Like you my S2 was working like a dream before.
  • Hello,

Many thanks for the useful link - will take a look at that.

Thanks too, stulaunch, for your advice - thought it might be a bit "glitchy" as with all new stuff, so may take your advice and leave it for a while for the glitches to get ironed out before doing the upgrade. Sorry to hear of your problems though - perhaps you can revert back to the old system/set up, I don't know?

I updated my o2 S2 to 4.0.3 via Samsung Kies (PC)

I like the data counter, charging % on the lock screen, menu system is better and more informative.

    I haven't noticed anything detrimental.

When I contacted SE UK, they said when the upgrade is available, the user can upgrade but if they want to downgrade back to gingerbread etc then the owner will have to return the handset to them, 1gb ram is ideal for ICS so I'm gonna wait to see how others are getting on with it.

ICS is good, although I flashed a custom ROM as I didn't particularly want Sony's version.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Totally agree, but like many others who are regretting it now, i followed the hype and updated to ICS..I found it too buggy, forced closes, apps not working etc.

Thank fcuk ive done flashing before so wasnt too much of a trouble rolling back to gingerbread.

ICS is only good on the nexus, atleast you can actually see (touchwiz ;)) the difference lol.

It's not bad (updated S2 on T-Mobile via Kies) but some glitches. Primarily the email client which seems to randomly mark things as unread, and there does indeed seem to be some issues with screen responsiveness although not sure if that's my imagination.

To be honest, I can't really see what difference it makes...

Mine was updated via Kies direct from Samsung being a sim-free model. I also find it to appear laggy sometimes but the main things I find are the browser whether it is the stock or Skyfire/Dolphin force close fairly regularly and freeze the screen up for a few seconds. Also the battery life is not as good as before but this maybe due to more apps running in the background as when I used to close all apps via the task manager it left me with 200-250mb of stuff running but this never seems to be below 350mb now. All was hunky dory before. :(

Shame it does not appear to be easy to switch back for the time being.
