Of course it is my opinion, that is what happens on an internet forum and the reason I put 'IMO' in the post.

That I am on mains gas is irrelevant. As I put in another post my son has just bought a large detached house and he has exactly the same dilemma as jandyt on what heating to install; and has gone for oil.

We will not agree on what COP can be guaranteed on a heat pump - or expected given a normal winter.

However as this is a Money Saving forum, let us deal with the economics of a heat pump installation over oil CH and perhaps you will give your figures.

If the average gas consumption in UK is 16,500kWh pa it is reasonable to use that figure for oil. so 1,650litres costing approx £1,000.

If you wish consider a house using approx 50% more than average i.e. 24,000kWh(a figure you used earlier) costing £1,440.

Jandyt who posed the question used the figures of £3,000 for oil and £10,000 for an ASHP. Would you consider that reasonable?

So to make economic sense the £7,000 has to be recovered. Bear in mind that he has to borrow the extra £7k or lose interest.
