Why is it always stick rather than carrot?

Because we've run out of money for buying carrots.

As existing debts are paid off they can keep the money in reserve instead of loaning it out again.

No the money is repaid to the bank they borrowed the money from to lend the money in the first place.

At the peak in 2007/08 around 52% of all bank lending in Europe was inter bank. With UK banks contributing their part to the party by selling packaged mortgage bundles in their billions to who would ever would buy them.

After 40 years of growth the world experienced negative Fractional Reserve Banking for the first time. A contraction of leveraged debt. Which has had the central banks printing paper in a desperate attempt to maintain an orderly wind down.

That's because we don't plant enough seeds and grow them ourselves, we have to import them all or buy them from overseas owners.

We just had 13 years of a chancellor that apparently did nothing but invest..

Should we try again? if so, who do you think would be a good man for the job? - and presumably we should borrow more money for these investments?

You wanted growth for agriculture & manufacturing - I've given you the only solution. I know it probably doesn't chime with the way you'd like to world to be, but do you really think it would be ineffective? The only way to compete on a global scale in relatively low skilled jobs is by being cheap.

I'm afraid socialism was quite a nice idea, it just hasn't really worked out.

    question: apart from london mayors

Can anyone explain to me !!!!!! is mayors going to do to change our lives?
even in councils i mean i can see alot of party politics when Lab/LIB/Cons dont get there way with Councils they can use the mayor as a scapegoat

I mean do councils implement rules from parelement rule anyway . Excuse my spelling

Is a mayor just a added expense to our citys which councils cant afford.

An excellent way of doing this would be to cut benefits & stop giving people the option of not working.
Ah yes, those were the days, slavery, child labour, sweatshops. Wouldn't help though. A Chinese worker would still get paid less than a Brit could live on, and other countries grow crops cheaper because they get more sunshine. So you still wouldn't create any jobs in manufacturing and agriculture.

We are not going to create those jobs here if we expect them to be self-financing. The only way to create those sorts of jobs here is to pay for the social value of having them.

Look at the major peak in debt at the end of the 40's, presumably a result of WW2 legacy and the creation of the welfare state, remind me what was that comment from SuperMac in the 50's :) Oh I remember

The cost of a product isn't just the wages associated with it. Theres also the managment, travelling, transport etc.

Believe it or not, e do still have agriculture & manufacturing.. just not so much as we usedto. It's not impossible.

In the 15 years we have lived here, mostly rural agricultura,l with urban sprawl minimum of 15 miles away, agriculture, in the real sense of it, has all but closed down.

From a nearby high point you could view fields brimming with livestock for 5-10 miles around, milk herds and sheep farming. Looking now it is largely just open field with limited cropping or wasted cropping.

"Protectionism" in some form is the only way we will improve things in the short term both in manufacturing and agriculture. If we let things keep on unraveling we will not be in position to pull it back we will be reliant on imports and inward foreign investment.
