Sports Direct returns & refunds

I recently visited a Sports Direct store where the policy is no refunds, only credit or exchange available, including items purchased that are the wrong size. As there are no changing facilities available in store there is no way of determining how an item fits before purchase; as we all know, sizes can vary greatly between clothing manufacturers. I looked at my copy of MSE's wallet guide but it doesn't cover such cases. How are Sports Direct able to do this when not providing any means of trying on clothing?

Kindest regards

They're acting within the law, but I agree it's not in the least helpful if there are no changing rooms.

But, let's face it... you don't have to shop there. Most of these sports stores are appalling IMO. They all stink and are staffed by idiots. Buy online.

Buying online wont help!. You cannot try stuff on there either!.

I guess it's a way of making you go back to the shop with the item that doesn't fit, and for you to use that credit note thing to buy another item :)

I just wouldn't shop there if there was no changing rooms or no refund policy. The one in our town has a changing room but the staff look at you like you've got 2 heads if you ask to use it. So I've stopped going in there. I prefer to shop where they have a clear returns policy, so if I buy something for the wee man, I know I can take it back and get my money back if he doesn't like it or if it doesn't fit.

You try on at home and if you don't want to keep it you're entitled to a full refund under the DSR. You're not forced into accepting a credit note or exchange.

I really don't understand the problem.

If you go into a Sports Direct store and buy an item of clothing, then that's probably because you wanted to buy it.
If when you get home you try it on and find it doesn't fit as well as you would like, then you can take it back and exchange for a larger/smaller item, can't you?
Or if the larger/smaller size isn't available then you accept a credit note and pop back later when hopefully the have you size in stock again.

In most cases, this is fine, I agree. However, sometimes you try something on and it just looks gopping on you, regardless of whether it's the right size or not.

It's frustrating to not be able to try clothes on before buying.

I went to Sports Direct on Friday and tried on a pair of running trousers.

Bought and paid for them at 21.99. Was walking out of the store past the rail that they were hanging on and noticed that they had a yellow 50% off sticker attached to them. Full price 21.99- half price 10.99.

Checked my pair that I'd bought and they had no yellow sticker. So I picked up an identical pair and took them back to the till and explained that I thought I'd been charged too much. They agreed and said I could swap them but I had to have the difference on a gift card. WHAT? They said that they offered no refunds, only exchanges or gift cards and it was clearly displayed at all their till points. I pointed out that their till points are covered by the huge bag for life bags and the till I was served at didn't have the t & cs on display.

They said they couldn't do anything for me apart from put the money on a gift card.

REALLY? Are they allowed to do this?

You offered to pay £21.99 for the goods, they accepted this offer, the contract was formed. What is says on the shelf is irrelevant.

Lesson for the future - go to a proper shop.

Get a second pair. That then puts the amount you have paid as the same as you were originally happy to pay, but you've now got the bonus of an extra pair as well!

Of course they are allowed to offer the gift card with your refund on it.
In turn, you are allowed to refuse that offer.

So have you now got the money on a gift card?

If so, it matters not whether they are 'allowed' to do that, because you have accepted their proposal.
