Buyer threatening to report me to HMRC because I wouldn't pay his return shipping fee

If you made a mistake it's reasonable to pay for the return of an item, whether private or business.

I wouldn't be worried about the HMRC threat, but I'd be more worried about the more mundane issue of feedback for something which you are responsible for. Genuine or not, if you make a mistake, you take the consequences.

"If" there is nothing to hide from the HMRC, why such a stress...?

'If' you don't want to take the seller's word for it, why not PM them instead of coming on and insinuating things ? Some people worry more than others, it's likely the OP is one of these.
  • Some people have weak nervous systems, are easily frightened and/or have no spare capacity or resources to deal with additional stress and problems.

The argument that people who are innocent have nothing to worry about is not one that I have ever accepted. Often, they are the ones who agonise the most, whereas the guilty can be brazen.

    I'm selling my own stuff.

If this is you, are you sure about that?

Op, if your account on eBay is in the same name as on here then I might just err on the side of caution and remove my suggestion not to worry.

The multiple items might just be enough to raise a suggestion that you are in fact trading. If you are not already registered with HMRC then I suggest you do so immediately.
I also think you have a bigger issue though, your stars are a bit on the low side and I fear you are heading into the realms of being restricted from selling. Get this current issue out the way the best you can and keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't result in low stars. Then spend a bit of time working on your stars, maybe go free post format while to get the p and p star up.

My comment was said while my tongue was firmly in my cheek.

If it's their account, they are registered on ebay as a business seller.
Seeing as how HMRC are cracking down on traders not registered then best that get's done asap.
Hopefully you're not on kind of benefits.
