No hot water was run - I was just emptying the sink. It is a glass measuring jug - pyrex type.fluffnutter wrote: »Was any hot water run before the jug was taken out of the sink? Deffo take it back then. Sounds faulty."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
Burning question - pyrex, or looked like pyrex but cheap?
Pyrex has a very high thermal conductivity, which means extremes of temperature even out quickly, which prevents this kind of thing. Thick glass (even safety glass) has a much poorer thermal conductivity, and high internal tension - so extremes of heat and cool are much more likely to cause shattering!
If it was actual 'pyrex' branded, I should get in touch with the manufacturer for a somewhat speedy replacement0 -

Completely agree, athough the OP did say it didn't actually come into contact with any water, so even if it's not pyrex it shouldn't have spontaneously shattered. But then glass can be funny like that... I've had stuff literally explode when I've been holding it but I've always just put it down to my dynamite personality."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
There's been a few threads recently about this happening with glass oven doors and such.0

It was from As. and I think their make. I have in the past had glass jugs from Wilkos and this has never happened.Burning question - pyrex, or looked like pyrex but cheap?

Asda own brand - take the bits back to them and ask for a replacement I guess. Sounds like it wasn't so much the thermal gradient (which will have been a small factor) as lower build quality (maybe a crease or scratch weakening it).
When it 'goes', it can be quite dramatic thanks to the massive internal stresses - but it shouldn't fail in normal careful use of course.0 -
Glass breaking on its own has been on these boards a number of times and is a well known, but quite scary, phenomena!
