Which one to go for? BT Infinity Vs. Sky Fibre?

Hi all,

I've been wanting to upgrade to FTTC Broadband for a while now, since my internet now (currently on Sky Unlimited) isn't very good.

Since I'm with BT for phone, I received a call from them, and was offered a deal from them. However, since I'm with Sky for Broadband, I'd prefer to stick with them, especially since I hear BT have throttling. Also Sky only offer 2mb upload, and since I play many games online (currently receiving 300kb right now) would this be a problem?

Which would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

BT's FTTC there is no throttling only on p2p.

Can you get Sky FTTC? I cant and been on FTTC for 13 months.

I think of the two you would need phoneline rental, calls and the FTTC package, no buts!

There are a fair few other ISP offering FTTC service and you can keep existing line and calls with who ever with now.
Just off top of my head https://www.adsl24.co.uk, https://www.webtapestry.co.uk etc and 12 month contract.
One thing for sure i wouldnt entertain BT for just phone line and calls. Just the line rentals dearer than paying now and anytime 24/7 calls plus other benefits. Then add £4.9 p/m to that.

I must confess it took me 10 days to hand over my MAC to BT:eek: but only after the cancellation call they gave me what i went to extreme lengths to obtain all failing.

I have signed up for Sky Fibre and did wonder if I made a mistake and should have signed up for BT Infinity. I decided to stick with Sky due to them having no traffic management.

Anyway, in relation to the 2MB upload. I have been on Sky User forums and they got some info on the new 80/20 last week which came true and it would now seem that as of Tuesday (1st May) Sky may well increase the upload speeds from 2MB to 10MB.

BT offers me 10MB to 17MB on Infinity, yet Talk Talk Fibre delivers usually always 37/38MB....go figure, its the same product rebadged, its like years ago at the Rover garage, I took the MG ;)

Hardly a fair comparison, if you took BT FTTC you would be getting the same if not better than the dreaded TT from same cab, same exchange and network. Only Sky's different with their own network to the exchange.
What happens when more people get conned in to the service, then when their IPTV launched.

Well thats all very well but if the regular shopper see's 38MB estimate for TT, and BT Infinity 10-17MB at more cost what you think most will do ? Go with BT ? Given they are not aware its the same product rebadged LOL I'm down for 40MB package so TT clearly are a winner, given in my experience customer services suck at both companies.

I've been waiting 6 months for YouView (Talk Talk TV) & if its not launched by July I'm off to BT Infinity/Vision, Virgin & Sky are just too expensive to justify considering catchup tv is all I watch in MY time, last time I watched LIVE tv was at some other licence paying persons house who watches nothing but tv in retirement (dear dad LOL) :D

I'm patiently waiting for Sky fibre to go active in my area (next month).

If speed was my only concern (I get decent speed from Sky currently but far faster is available to me on cable) I'd have probably moved by now but for me it's the overall value and bundling all my services (TV, phone & BB) makes for far better value.

^Easy way to get value is to use Primus line rental or BT Basic, and have a mobile with unlimited landlines, example Orange Racoon with unlimited landlines £20.50 with 200 mobile mins, BT line rental £14.50 unlimited landline calls £4.90...the remaining few quid does not buy 200 mobile mins & landline connection costs per call (unless you have TalkTalk landline mobile bundles or Penny Mobile)

(You can add unlimited texts to Racoon for £5)

Use landline for Broadband only, or standalone Virgin BB if you can get a good deal.

Bundles DONT always work out cheaper ! you need to understand your average, commit to altering non inclusive plan usage & research deals.

I had BT Basic & Orange Unlimited broadband at one point £14.50 a quarter landline, £5 month for Orange Broadband. Racoon (upgrade) 550 mins (500 bonus), unlimited landlines £10 odd a month and £5 text unlimited bundle.

£25 a month bought me loads above, including to a combo of 1000 mins 30 international landlines (some mobiles too!) Orange & 01,02, 03 UK landlines FREE when using SignalBoost to connect to Orange.

Orange broadband 2nd line was FREE 1000 combo mins to 100 international landlines, 01,02,03 & Orange mobiles....

    Then also....Orange Magic Numbers !

Rare I used most of them, mainly mobile mins and unlimited landlines on mobile, with the odd long call to a international landline (FREE:)) but for £25 a month my usage rarely went above £25.... its about knowing your usage pattern, adjusting it & THEN saving cash including in your plans/budgets high emergency out of the usual usage !

It's not for the faint hearted, if your broke or dedicated tho its ON ! ;)

I've been on BT Infinity (FTTC) for a few months now, and honestly can't fault it. My previous BT copper ADSL connection ran at about 3.5Mb and dropped-out several times a day. My Infinity connection hasn't dropped out once - the stats on the router software show a constant connection since the day it was installed. I'm getting about 40Mb and there is no throttling (unless you are a heavy p2p user).

However, one very important thing (and I fell into this trap myself initially): Although FTTC will give you download speeds of 40-100Mb, the WiFi in most devices has a maximum speed of about 18Mb (despite officially being rated 54Mb for 'G'). So this is the maximum speed you will get while using a device connected to Infinity over WiFi.

When I first ran some speed tests on various laptops I was consistently getting measurements of 18Mb (obviously disappointing). It was only when I realised, and ran some speedtests with a network cable plugged directly into the router that I saw 40Mb speeds.
