could do with the alarm one how much are they? dont want to go to sleep and not wake up really!
All the Argos ones are 'alarm' - I don't think there are such things as domestic 'detectors' which don't incorporate an alarm.
The £29.79 Kidde (2 in 1) - at Argos - is the better buy as you then don't need a separate Smoke detector. And you can get it for £25.94 (inc pp) at the link on my post above. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Mikeyorks wrote:Can you show me where to find a domestic 'detector' that doesn't also incorporate an 'alarm'? Because I don't think they exist - it's simply the terminology ....... and not the technology that's different.
They are pretty useless as an ongoing warning system, but I suppose useful for holding next to a suspect gas device before reporting it to your landlord or getting it repaired yourself.0 -
That's cheating - it it doesn't have a battery and / or can't be screwed to the ceiling .. it doesn't count;)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

I have a gas detector.
It is about 6cm long, pinkish in colour and has two holes at the bottom.
It can detect mains gas (methane with smelly additives) propane and butane etc but it cannot detect carbon monoxide.
It performs the additional function of supporting the bridge of my spectacles.0 -
Mikeyorks wrote:No - I would personally think that's a bit silly. You're essentially suggesting that all types of gas are the same and a single detector is 'one size fits all'.
Equally silly, I'm afraid, is to get all excited about the obvious dangers of Carbon Monoxide (other thread you relate to) - then rush out looking for the cheapest.
Firstly, I didn't suggest that all types of gas are the same - I said that C/M is a TYPE of gas, and that persons with limited knowledge may misunderstand what TYPE of gas a GAS detector detects, so I was merely trying to help those who may not realise.
Secondly, yes I agree that the cheapest isn't always the best - but this is MSE where we try to inform each other of potential bargains!
Also, Woollies sell a CM Alarm/smoke det pack for £19.99 for anyone who wants to know.
The Ikea one is actually an alarm too - not just a detector, so my mistake for using the wrong word to describe it.0 -
MarkyMarkD wrote:Why should I have? As you unnecessarily started a new thread without included the history, which I hadn't read, then I had to try to understand it on its own like anyone else coming straight to this thread.
Fair point I suppose, but there was no need to be rude to me or other posters by suggesting they or I were a numpty to potentially misunderstand the definition of the term 'gas'.
For the record, even the Ikea advisor and the various colleagues she asked weren't 100% certain whether or not it detected CM as well as other gases.
I was only trying to helpful by informing people that the packaging on that particular product isn't clear, and if anyone HAD bought one, they must be aware that it doesn't do what they may thought it did.
Sometimes wonder why I bother wasting time trying to help people if all they are going to do is pick your thread to bits and insult you...:rolleyes:0 -
Strangely, the IKEA member of staff you refer to has changed from being adamant in your OP that they had never sold CO detectors and that this detector definitely didn't detect CO, to being uncertain about what it did.
Funny how she's become a numpty too, to support your argument that it's not numpty to not know the difference between "gas" and CO.
I think we'll leave it there (or at least, I will).0 -
Jeez - why do some people have to turn everything into a debate?
Like I said, next time I won't bother and I'll just keep my well intentioned advice to myself...
Mods, please close this thread - it is apparently of no use to anyone :rolleyes:0 -
Does anyone here own a gas detector and recommend one? I'm anosmic and need one as a safety device. There are a few out there but it'd be nice to get a recommendation on one that does the job.0

If you could be bothered to do a quick Google you'd find lots of them. They are different - one WILL save your life, the other probably won't , unless you check it every 5 minutes !
One for you to look at: http://www.c-p-p.co.uk/category/asp/CtgID/2137/af/page.htm
Detector £4-95; Alarm £29.99 - I know which one I would buy.0
