I'm typing this from my 3rd bedroom ( yes it's a home office), but i successfully brought up a child from the age of 5 to 17 in it without any major problems - it's not huge but he only slept/played in it. It had a single bed/wardrobe/chest of drawers & desk in at the time.
Personally i have better things to do with my time than sit in a bedroom admiring how large it is - i'd rather have smaller bedrooms and a decent amount of living space downstairs (which i have)
Life is all about compromise when it comes to property - or is it the fact that i'm just common working class that i'm not offended by small bedrooms?:rotfl:
LOL! I think that must be my problem too then! Guess im not posh enough for large bedrooms! :T0 -
When renting to call a bedroom a double bedroom it must be bigger than 10m2 floorspace.
A single bedroom must be more than 6.5m2 or it can not be classed as a bedroom.
A good sized double is at least 12m2 floorspace to fit a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk+chair ( student market)0 -

Downstairs family space is important, but children also need a quiet space to study (and that means no TV or other distractions), and some space to develop their own interests. A TV takes up very little space; activities that actually enrich a child's development tend to take up more room.
I have so far lived in three countries, and there is definitely a connection between the size of living accomodation and how much TV is being watched. Some homes don't even have space for a dining table; surely that can't be acceptable.0 -

I agree too many children watch far too much tv - but surely that's a parenting issue and not dependent on size of house.
I never had a home that couldn't fit a dining table in admittedly - however my first flat had to make do with a pull out/fold out one that only came out for mealtimes as not enough room to leave it out all the time.
By some folks statement on here my son's room at Uni should be unlawful & he has to sleep and work in it & pay £75 a week for it:D0 -
My bedroom is 12'x7'6" floor space plus a built in double wardrobe. I have a double bed and there is still ample space all round the bed. This is more than ample for my needs as the room is for sleeping in, well at least using the bed anyway;).
For me the living area is far more important, I like my PC and desk, the tv system and hi fi all in the same room, that's important for me, I suppose we're all different though. It's someone else's fault.0 -
From what I understand, Japanese homes are significantly more cramped than we are used to in this country. I don't hear many claims that the Japanese are culturally stifled because they all live on top of one another.
Back when a lot of these Victorian houses were being built, family sizes were much bigger. Those "double" bedrooms used to be occupied by multiple children.
A child doesn't need a huge space to be able to use his/her imagination - the one "toy" kids seem to ignore these days!0
