Bedroom sizes

Why are properties advertised as 3 bed when actually they are 2 bed + study? The 3rd so called bedroom is always small enough to be just a study. A bedroom should have a minimum measurement of 15'x10' to be able to be classified as a decent size but most are just 12'x10' or 10'x9'. Why can't properites have decent sized bedrooms for the common middle class man?

Most people can manage with a main bedroom smaller than 15' x 10', they have to, as millions of houses in the UK have bedrooms at least 20 sq ft smaller. The standard 3 bed house type from the late 19th century onwards has 2 double bedrooms and 1 single, so if a single bed will fit into a 3rd bedroom and leave space for a small wardrobe, it is correct to call that room a bedroom.

BTW what is a "common middle class man"?
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Most are still big enough to get your car into, but you need to climb in and out through the sunroof.

My house was 4beds but two were only small so we made 3 decent ones but didn't want to start blocking doors up so was left with a junk room, that's now getting made into a study, if i ever finish it.

Our bedroom is 10ft by 10ft. No it isn't huge but it is a decent sized double. Our bed fits in it fine (it could fit a full double but would cause there to be even less floor space), our wardrobe system works well in there, a chest of draws, bedside table, record player (with stand etc) and just enough room to store my wheelchair when not in use as well as the ironing board. As you can guess it is cramped but it works.

What is a common middle class man? Do common middle class women and children need a certain sized room? My dictionary does not include a specified size under bedroom. If you can get a 6X3 bed in for a child then that is sufficient.

By "common middle class man" I meant someone who has a reasonable job and a reasonable salary and not a rich man. I meant that the common man with a reasonable salary should be able to afford a property with 3 decent sized bedrooms. And it should not be only for the rich people.

Our house was actually advertised as being 3/4 bedrooms. Due to the size and shape of room four, there's actually no way it could practically be used as a bedroom, and it is indeed the junk room. Due to the size and shape of another room (very long and thin), it again cannot be practically used as a bedroom. So our "4" bedroom house is really a 2 bedroom.

Which is not a problem, there are only two of us. My pet peeve is rooms that are bedrooms, in that they are large enough to fit a bed, but no furniture. One of the (many) things that put me off buying a new build was that they all seem to be built to this principle.

We desperately need some minimum sizing requirements in this country - I believe that these used to exist - but were abolished?
