Sky TV Price Freeze - All Smoke & Mirrors?

Hi All,!

I was very pleased last year when Sky stated it would freeze its prices until August 2012 but I wonder if it was simply smoke and mirrors from Sky?

At the same time as the price freeze Sky changed its base pack pricing from £20 + £1 per mix to £20 or £25.

As I subscribed to the general mix plus an additional mix I paid £21.00 each month. Now it seems I have been automatically moved to the £25 mix (getting the full set of non-premium channels). But as the price freeze is in affect I still only pay £21 per month.

What will happen when the price freeze is lifted? Will I only pay £20 or will Sky assume I want to pay more and charge me £25 per month?

They will probably keep you on the entertainment + pack and you'll pay an extra £4/ month.
Its up to you if you want to downgrade, you have to give 30 days notice.

Nobody will know until nearer August. Do you really think we are privy to Sky's commercial decisions or clairvoyant?

It is pretty safe to assume that, since you are now on the Entertainment+ mix, you will be charged £25 from Aug/Sept.

the price freeze is until end of August then all customers will pay the full price for packages - £20 for entertainment and £25 for entertainment extra which is what you will be paying, if you want to reduce - remember the 30 days notice period

Bear in mind that if you reduce you just get what was the entertainment package.
I contacted Sky to confirm this, which they did in amongst a load of !!!!!!!! about what great value price freeze was and how most customers wanted simplicity of just 2 tiers. Absolute nonsense - basically anyone who did not take all 6 packs will be getting rises of between 15 and 25% on the non premium channels unless they don't want the non standard channels - so if you want any music, any kids, any knowledge then you need to take the lot.
Sky rip off definitely but not really smoke and mirrors.

No. It isn't safe to assume that at all. When the "price freeze" ends, those who have been covered by it will be charged the going rate in September 2012. What Sky's going rates, for what, will actually be in September 2012, and beyond, remains to be seen.

(And, by the way, Sky requires 31 days' notice of downgrade changes and cancellations, not 30.)

Sky is a commercial enterprise, to whose services you can choose to subscribe or not. It isn't a "rip-off" – if you don't like what it charges for its product, you don't have to subscribe to it and can go without.

Freeview and FreeSat are available free (apart from a BBC Licence if you watch them live).

actually sky will accept up to maximum 40 days notice for cancellation coz as an advisor that's what we were told, but they don't tell you that one! Apologies for the typo, it is 31 days, I should know unfortunately used to work for them - don't hold it against me

Of course I don’t hold it against you! Thanks for the additional information. You give much valuable help to others, here. :A

Personally, though, when cancelling, I prefer to wait until about 26 days before a discount period is due to end. That way, although it means I’ll be paying the full rate for 5 days at the end of it, it provides some leeway for offers to be made and negotiated before the service cuts off!

luckily I managed to escape but will give advice to others - I worked in retentions department so I know the cancellation game pretty well, lol
