@sare have you eliminated hardware problems as a cause of the trouble ?
Things to consider are memory errors, overheating of CPU and motherboard components, swollen motherboard capacitors, an overstretched power supply, a card that creeps in and out of its slot.
What are the circumstances of you PC problems ? Is there a pattern or can you establish a pattern ?

    Joe,
I do wonder if its hardware related but I unfortuantely I know nothing about that side of things!

We did have some extra Ram put in shortly before the problems started, and around the same time Directx 9 was installed which I've heard may not be compatable with my GeForce440 MX graphics card.

We get two types of crash. One where if you're playing a game it will crash and go back to the desktop, and one where you can be doing anything on the PC and its like the power suddenly switches off and then it has to reboot.

I want to take it in to a shop but as these problems are intermittent I don't know if they'd find the cause.

Perhaps the first thing to try is Memtest86 see :-
    http://www.memtest86.com/#download0
you probably want to download the precompiled windows/dos version.
This can be made to create a boot floppy that you can boot the system and test the memory automatically, independent of your existing operating system.
It is a short download and the floppy takes 20s to create. The tests are very thorough and can take 30min to do a cycle.
It is only worth continuing with other tests if memory problems can be eliminated.
