Anyone recommend a PC error repair program?

I'm fed up with my PC crashing and having loads of glitches, but not knowing very much about PC's I wouldn't know where to begin.
I've seen on Google various free software programs that claim to scan your PC and fix any registry errors and other problems. They are usually called things like PC Doctor.
Has anyone used one of these and can recommend it.
I don't want to be downloading anything dodgy that will cause more problems.
Thanks,
Sare

My advise is to go on to http://forums.computeractive.co.uk/
Have a read through some of the articles there, I have found it quite useful in the passed. If its not much help send me an E-mail.
Hope this helps you both.Raymo0 -
Sare,
Download and run the free program "Ad Aware Personal" which will get rid of spyware and other nasties from your PC:

If you don't have anti-virus software installed, I can also recommend BitDefender Free Version 7:

Running full scans with these two programs should help.
Thanks

The only program I can recommend 100% for scanning windows problems is a paid for program. Norton Utilities. I've been using this for years and it's got me out of trouble many times. It will scan for any errors in your system and fix them for you.
I'd give this program 10/10 anyday! How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Are you having a laugh? Norton slows your PC down as much as most of the spyware out there.
Programs everyone should use...
Avast/AVG (both very good free antivirus progs, avast seems simpler to use)
ZoneAlarm/Kerio (both good firewalls, again ZA easier)
Spybot - Search and Destroy (finds spyware / nasties etc)
Ad-aware (similar to spybot, used in combi not much will get past)
Firefox (replacement for IE, much less likely to get any nasty infections)0 -

Norton utilities sits there till you open it. How can this slow your system if it's not on????
The computer I'm using to type on now is a few years old now. I built it myself and it goes like a bullet. I've worked on much newer computers (without norton) for people and frankly none of them have been as fast as this.
People hold their own views. But Norton do very good quality software and for a scanning program Norton utilities is top notch.
Read the original message again. The poster is not asking for antivirus/antispyware. He is asking for a program to scan his OS for problems. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Its as good as Norton Utils and optmises PC and can also change the look and feel with the builtin winstyle.
Theres also a bultin 1-Click Maintenance program with a click of a button fixes registry.
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
Don't forget drivers - these often cause system crashes. Make sure you have the latest drivers from your hardware manufacturers. They usually have them for free download on their websites.Just had an email saying press release. Can someone tell me where the release key is?0

Thankyou all!
There's a few bits there for me to look at.
I currently have SpyBot and run AVG so I know my PC is virus free if nothing else.
I only use the Windows Firewall though.
I know the general opinion seems to be that this is no good.
I recently used the Shields Up test and my PC passed 100%, as not being detected.Does this mean I have a good system,or do I still need another firewall?0
