How long ago was this? People should really spend a bit more time in places before judging them. Quite often it is people that just drive the town that slate it!
My wife was the same with London, she'd only been on the tube and to the touristy places and hated the hustle and bustle until I showed some more of the nicer places that you get to know about by spending some time there and speaking to locals. There are some lovely villages between Haverhill and Colchester if a village is what youre after. I suppose a lot of it depends on budget.
Sorry for the rant just annoys when people slate where Im from without even really knowing it. It may be a hole but its my hole!
p.s I now live in village outside of Haverhill:rotfl:0 -
My sister and bil live in Dedham. He commutes into London everyday ( train from Manningtree station) and this works well for them.
I've visited quite a lot, and the postives about the area are that it is very pretty, the local primary school gets good results, there seems a good community spirit and an active church community. The downside is that it is that all the people I've met at parties etc are white, upper middle class and most of the husbands commute into London, with lots of wives hobby farming/ doing charity work. There's nothing wrong in this but it does mean that if you are different from this ( as my family is when we visit) you stand out.0 -
My parents moved to one of the bigger villages along the Stour about 10 or 15 years ago and seem to have been accepted fine, although it probably helped a lot that as they were taking over one of the few shops in the village, they got to know everyone quickly. People there seem very friendly and will always say hello and stop for a chat (to find out who I am!) if I walk the dog there.
I've never witnessed any deliberate racism there, but it's so close to 100% white that it's hard to tell. I think people accidentally giving offence by saying things like 'How do you like England?' to a born and bred Londoner (one I witnessed in a village in another area), is definitely possible.
I have heard that one of the smaller nearby villages is very strange in an inbred Wicker Man kind of way, but I don't know how true that is and can't remember which one it is anyway!Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0
