They have taken too much

I was out shopping and encountered that embarrassing moment at the checkout when my Credit Card was declined. I am no where near my limit so I was not expecting. I immediately called my bank to basically ask !!!!!!?. They said I was over my limit by £200!! It turns out a company I am using next week for motorbike lessons had taken too much money. The price for these lessons is £815 which was taken and expected. They then went back and took another £500 which cleared and the again tried for another £200 which was declined. I am unable to contact anybody from this company until (tomorrow) Monday.
Am I entitled to any compensation from them because
a) they put me over my limit affecting my credit score
b) caused me embarrassment when CC was declined at shop
c) left me without food over the weekend and without packed lunch for my son for school.
d) without petrol to get to work

thanks

If it was the card company at fault they would almost certainly be willing to compensate and put things right.

Morally this training company should too. But they won't have the same regulatory regime as financial services.

So you could ask either for compensation or a discount. But if they don't play ball you then have a civil dispute. Small Claims Court etc.

I dont see it being the card companies fault, it was the bike company who made extra withdrawals, I should have mentioned that they made the extra withdrawals under a different company name but is same company.

Have you told the card company the transactions are unauthorised?

I did, they said they can put a stop on the card but however I asked them not to as i rely on it for shopping and petrol. I cant wait around for a new card to be sent out as I would be without some essentials. I said I will speak to the bike company and try and get it sorted first, sadly though It happens to be a weekend and i cant talk to the bike company until monday.

Incompetence IS permitted, and providing the resolve the problem by repaying the money taken in error, that is all you can expect - as you would not have been expected to pay for it for a week or two. They would not be liable for any consequential losses or embarassment caused, but they could always make a gesture of goodwill, it certaily isn't compulsory.

Do you live completely off your CC, do you have no money to pay for food and petrol. If not, how do you pay your CC bill.

I can understand a) but the resto of it, come on.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I pay my £900 CC bill each month and then use it again to pay my way the next month. Reason I use my CC is I get discounts of 5-10% off supermarkets incl petrol when I buy "gift cards" through my company. Its not I can't live without a CC it's just part of the cash flow system that I use. I have monthly savings of £1,000 but these are not accessible without penalties. I just got caught with it being a weekend.

Hard lesson to be learned here, NEVER rely on one card as your only method of purchase.

I buy gift cards for my supermarket shopping too, as I can get 4% off which is more than any cashback scheme (excluding promotional periods). However, in that case, why not use the gift card to pay for your shopping instead of the CC?

I take 2 CCs with me just in case the GC is refused (and a DC as backup for those), as I never want to say 'Sorry, can't pay' with a truckload of shopping.
