buying from a 0 rated seller

Options
I have seen something I like, however the seller has no buys or sells to her name. I know that everyone starts like this, but as the price starts at £40, I would like to do everything to protect myself from anything going wrong, Seller registered this month too.

Perhaps I am over cautious. But its too much money for me to lose!!

Can anyone suggest anything before I make a bid?

check the listing fully, check the seller accepts paypal (preferably they will be paypal verified as well), make sure you can't get it anywhere else, ask the seller a question and see what their reply is like, check p&p costs
  • I wouldnt risk it, never do but as stavros says if payed by paypal you should be able tog et your money back if something did go wrong

As mentioned, ask the seller a couple of questions about the item. If they are genuine you should get a prompt reply. Also you will be able to tell from the tone of their reply whether they are friendly or not.

We all have to start somewhere, so you should give them a chance if you feel confident enough. As stated above if you use Paypal as well, this will give you the peace of mind of being able to do a chargeback (assuming the seller doesn't empty their account).

This is a bit harsh, but to be honest I will not even BOTHER reading an eBayers auction if they have 0 feedback. I think I bought a CD for 49p off one and that's it.

I know we all have to start somewhere, but the 0 rated sellers could buy some stuff first, just to get themeselves some good feedback. I just dont see why I should trust someone who has no proof they should be trusted.

Everyones opinion is different, and contacting them is a good idea. :)

I'm afraid I agree with JPS on this one, I wouldn't bid.

Any sensible seller would have built up a bit of feedback buying a few things first and getting to know how ebay works.

I wouldn't trust a new seller to know how it all works, if this really is his first time ever on ebay he might not understand all sorts of things, if it does go wrong he also has nothing to lose as he can dump this account and start again.

Yes we all have to start somewhere, but I would prefer to see the seller having started a little as a buyer just to see how things work.

    Hi

I am a seller on ebay but have never bought anything. When I sold my first item I had 0 feedback. I would also advise caution as not everybody is honest but an email question that gets a friendly prompt response should put your mind at rest.

We are all too hasty sometimes to see the worst in someone. I am grateful to my first buyer (he spent £142 on a digital camera and printer) who had faith. I am slowly building up my rating but it does take time and we all start at the beginning.
Once I've saved it I spend it !!

    Yesterday I went from a 0 feedback to a 1 positive feedback :j

I paid for the item straight away and added a note that it was my first time and I hoped that I had done everything corrrectly :o

I'm itching to sell some of my stuff (junk) on ebay but as pointed out, I need to learn the ropes first so I'm going to buy some bits and pieces first.

I think it's a bit harsh to say that you wouldn't even read their auction, though for amounts like £40 I can see why you wouldn't bid. It's just a shame that a few 'ratbags' give newbie ebayers a bad name and make us all untrustworthy.

Same here i have a few sellers with no feedback that is selling stuff i really want and have wanted for sometime and are costing more than the person posted on here, yes most people are very honest but again there are some ratbags out there, trouble is i have asked for p+p cost on one of the items by email twice and still not a reply and now have tried again.
As i am trying to find out if paypal is a method they use and p+p cost and i am not really happy buying them unless i know these questions.

It maybe because they are away for easter but i emailed well before then and still no email, so why have they not replied,i know when i sell things i email back asap as it could be a buyer for my item.

I really worry that the item sells to another person it i dont bid and i dont think i will get another anytime soon and its something i wanted many years ago that i enquired from a shop about and had none left and would not have anymore or know where to get it, so really do i take the chance it maybe a new seller or someone out to scam.

I suppose its my choice but its hard one.

bwatt00 definitely don't bid if they don't tell you the post and packing.

As for payment methods, all their payment methods should be shown on the auction listing, if it doesn't say paypal then they are probably not going to want to use it.

I only ever sell on ebay. When I sold my first item I had about 5 questions on it (it was my previous motherboard) and answered them all immediately. I wouldnt bid on such a high starting price from a newby nor one which did not answer questions.
