Virgin/MBNA Credit Card Closed and Reopened

Hi folks,

I applied in March for a Virgin Credit Card and was accepted with a credit limit of £3000. In the end I decided not to take the card as I didn't need as much as I thought.

However, (because my daughter is getting married) I need some more! Typical luck.

So I phoned Virgin and because they had closed my account they said I had to apply again. I wasn't too happy about applying again because I know its another search on my credit file and having opened and closed a virgin account knocked off 85 points from my credit score.

Anyway - I did apply again and I got a letter today saying that my application had been unsuccessful.

I'm quite cross about this, given the fact that only a month ago I was offered £3000 and only because the account had been closed had my credit score deteriorated. My score was in the high 900's with CreditExpert and now is classed as Fair.

In your opinions, do you think, I as a customer have the grounds to go back to Virgin and speak to someone about this and ask them to reconsider the application given the special circumstances.

Any advice would be appreciated before I call them on Monday.

Thanks,
P

You could call them and appeal yes - just like MBNA can say no again.
Forget any score you have from any CRA - it means nothing.
  • In what sense do you mean a CRA score means nothing? Do you mean that the consumer products available to see your credit score are rubbish?

If you have paid for a 'score' then you have wasted your money.
All lenders will have their own credit scoring when you apply.
They do not and cannot see your score.
  • Ah - okay. I'll bare that in mind. But - that makes the situation even more annoying.

Virgin do not allow you to reapply for a card less than 6 months after the account was closed.

    Apply for a different card.

  • Oh boy. It's getting better and better. Why did they let me do an application then? I'm looking forward to this conversation on Monday morning.

Nothing to look forward to, it's a credit from them so mbna do not have to give you a card again. Since the last card if you have top up other cards this wil show on your credit search as well. The total credit to how much you have used is also important.

It's entirely possible they declined you on a 'policy rule' before conducting a credit search.

Before getting yourself all excited, perhaps you should check your credit file, or ask MBNA, and see if they actually searched you for the second application?

    just call them up.

I was rejected a month ago for a Virgin CC. Called them up, they looked at it again and approved with a limit of £10k.
  • MBNA have carried out a credit search - it is recorded on my credit file. The letter states same.

I'll be calling them tomorrow regardless.
