Can you please spend some time and ready the forum first...
The answer is YES thousands have IGNORED them, because it is LEGAL to ignore someone who is trying to ILLEGALLY scam you.

As previously stated, I have read the forum, the stickies, BBC blog on the subject, watched the Youtube link, tbh I'm that sick to death of the 'effin subject I'm about ready to write a bleedin' cheque.
I've had some good, considered replies which lead me to think I can go down the ignore route. Others though have been a bit more ambiguous and actually made me question myself more.

One point which the OP has not clarified is whether the £1 parking charge is refundable against making a purchase at any of the stores sited on the retail park.

I don't know the answer. Like I said, I didn't even realise it was pay and display. The only info I have is from the brief conversation I had with the shop. I'm tempted to go there later to see what the signage actually says, and to see how I managed to miss it and the payterminals in an otherwise empty carpark.

Good, if you look you will see that the signs are worded in that the £80 is for a breach. Take a photo maybe and post it here?
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

You talk of putting food on tables, all I can say is God help them if you buckle under such pressure with the family budget.
All I will say, is get ready mate, they will come out of the woodwork like flies, it is called LIFE and as soon as you have earned a wage, there is always somebody far more clever than you waiting to take it from you without doing all that working stuff.
If you do pay the magic make it go away cheque, read the bit about late payments, that's the second hit of the scam, when they leave your letter in the tray until after the deadline, You dont seriously think they will leave it at that do you .. Oh no mate, make no mistake, like all scammers, they come back for MORE !

On the basis of the incomplete facts posted thus far, all I can say is that it would be most unusual for a retail park to charge customers for shopping at the on-site stores,- without the stores offering a refund of the parking charge.
  • The store simply said that it didn't belong to them, it was a private car park. A quick Google shows that a number of retail parks charge for parking.
  • Looking in to this further, it seems like it is quite an issue locally (not my locality, as discussed) with the MP being involved, calling the charges 'scandalous'. There was a story in the local paper, but it has been removed from their website.

Sorry, bud, but I am having problems understanding your position here. I have told you in no uncertain terms that all you have to do to dismiss this rubbish is to ignore it.

If they cannot state who was driving then they cannot do anything with it. You will get a bit of correspondence which, if ignored, will cease.

Why are you determined to go to a lot of trouble trying to work out the ins and outs, when it will all inevitably die if you ignore it?

Simple: The driver of the car made a contract with this company. In order to try to enforce the contract, the company must identify the driver. If they cannot do that (and they can't, if you don't reply to them) then they are stymied.

End of simple story. Why do you choose to complicate the issue?

Anyway, if you are keen to write a cheque, write me one for £60 for giving you this advice. If you don't pay I will send you some letters.

You wouldn't do that, so why cave in because a scamming company has some plausible headed paper and asserts an authority it doesn't have?
  • I like to make sure I've got all bases covered, and I want to check I'm doing the right thing. I don't think that's an unreasonable position.
There's a lot of dubious advice on the internet, much of the time offered by people with no qualifications to give that advice. I simply want to make sure that I'm listening to the right people.
