t-mobile forcing me to stay another month!

I've been with T-mobile phone provider for 24 months, and the reception has been terrible so I've been looking forward to getting out of it! I phoned them around 2 months before the end of the contract telling them I wanted out as soon as the contract ended. They told me I had to phone about 30 days before. I couldn't get through at this time so sent an email telling them I wanted to cancel, I also phoned again to be sure around 3 weeks before the end, during the conversation the phone cut off.
I phoned again today about a week before. Now they are telling me that because I didn't give 30 days verbal notice that I wanted to cancel I will have to stay on the contract for another month. Can they do this? and if I cancel my Direct debit, can they force me to pay? Surely even if they don't get the notice they require in the certain way they require it as in the terms and conditions - the contract was still only for 24 months so how can they force me to pay another month?

You do have to give 30 days notice or T-mobile stick extra month line rental on top which they say is in the T&C.
Its happened to me twice. I tried to cancel a week or so before the last 30 days but they insist phone on exact date. If you get it wrong somehow, they stick the extra month on. Each times its happened to me I have complained and got a refund.
Just ended a contract this month - 2 days prior to 30 day period I gave notice, just to be on safe side.
Speak to complaints and they might give you a refund pro rata.0 -

They can't, but they can report a default to CRAs and to sell the debt to debt collectors.and if I cancel my Direct debit, can they force me to pay?
Surely? It's the minimum term that is 24 months, not the contract.Surely even if they don't get the notice they require in the certain way they require it as in the terms and conditions - the contract was still only for 24 months so how can they force me to pay another month?
The contract is endless.
That said, I agree that it is a dirty trick to insist on the notice to be given exactly 30 days before the end. Common sense dictates that it has to be at least 30 days.0
