:hello:
I just made some vegan trifle last night..my first attempt. I'm not sure it was up to restaurant standards, but it tasted good.Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0 -
Ooh, I wish I'd read this thread earlier. I'm a newbie here, but had some fun at the Vegan Fayre with Badger Lady and company.
Is Yabba really Yagga, perhaps? We tried something with that name in the corner stall in the tent. I've been interested in it, because I see ads for it in magazines frequently, but I've never been able to find it in the store. It was pretty yummy!:o

Hi,
I've just turned veggie, mostly for my health but the animal ethics do play a part too. I'm wanting to give up all dairy and egg too, but am taking it all slowly. I don't eat much cheese anyway so that should be ok to give up, and milk already is starting to make me feel a bit queasy when I have it, but it's just making that final leap isn;t it? I do think I'll miss yoghurt though. I like vanilla yogs, or smooth yogs, def not with bits of fruit it (I'm fussy!) and although I do like the alpro smooth yogs I feel guilty at the money I spend on them. Would love to be able to make my own soya yog and am going to have a little experiment with it and adding some sugar and vanilla.

Hello all, sorry if this is the wrong area to post in, but it does seem the most fitting!
Due to ethical, environmental (and of course money saving!) reasons I'm going to try veganism for a week as part of the vegan society pledge.
I'm currently trying to find out which mainstream (ie. anything that would normally be available in a supermarket) beer and wine is vegan. I've heard that some supermarkets do label their vegan wines, but have you seen the amount they fit down an aisle!
Just wondering if there are any other vegans out there who could offer some advice. Especially with the weekend fast approaching!NOW DEBT FREE :jNEW FINANCIAL GOALSCAR COSTS POT : £0.00/£550.00________ REGULAR COSTS POT : £0.00/£396.25£3K BEFORE 30 : £0.00/£3000.00_______£200 HOLIDAY FUNDS BY 2012 : £0.00/£200.000 -
Iirc there is a big guide to both beer and wine on either the vegan society or veggie society website. I'm guessing veggie society, as I've read it before and im a veggie rather than vegan.0

You can get lists such as http://www.veggiewines.co.uk/supermarketsw.htm
The problem is lists go out of date very quickly. Sometimes you can get info by calling customer services or checking company websites. Labelling can be very inconsistent though, for instance Sainsburys have loads of products without animal ingredients that aren't labelled as vegan. Info also depends on if a beer is bottled or draught, and wine if it is in a box or bottle.
We're a vegan couple and to be honest neither of us pay too much attention to buying vegan alcohol. Read http://www.veganoutreach.org/guide/beingvegan.html - vegan is just a label and not a religion, do what you feel comfortable with.
Being vegan has many benefits, both for you, the animal and the environment. You are better off being 99% vegan rather than being too strict then giving up on it completely.0 -
thanks el gringo and paul, your replies are very helpful!
don't know if it will help you, but I've just found if you go on WaitroseDeliver website and type in 'vegan' it produces a list of everything in their store which is. Might not sound like much, but you don't seem to be able to do this with any of the supermarkets!
As a result, they got my custom today. Just went into my local one and picked up a nice white wine (only £3.99), vegan bagels and vegan fruit bars.
This coupled with bits and pieces I've picked over the week should mean I am ready to go tomorrow....
Thinking of using this thread as a diary to track things such as my meals, any difficulties I have and how it reflects on my pocket. Not sure if anyone will be interested it reading it though!NOW DEBT FREE :jNEW FINANCIAL GOALSCAR COSTS POT : £0.00/£550.00________ REGULAR COSTS POT : £0.00/£396.25£3K BEFORE 30 : £0.00/£3000.00_______£200 HOLIDAY FUNDS BY 2012 : £0.00/£200.000 -

how is becoming a vegan helping the environment?
Because you are utilising a very short food chain i.e. using the energy from plants directly instead of Plants>Cows/chickens etc> Humans. Energy is 'lost' at each stage of the food chain, so it's more efficient to keep it short. There's also a whole load of stuff like deforestation, pollution & so on associated with producing meat/animal produce.
On the whole it will probably work out more 'environmentally friendly' - assuming you're not getting your fresh fruit & veg flown in from all 4 corners of the world!
(have just been to Morrisons and gone *eek* at where their apples come from!)0
