If my car is really dirty, like the first wash after the winter salt, then I will pay a couple of quid and use the local jetwash to remove the horrible grime and grit, especially around the wheel arches, sills and front suspension.
I will then drive home and use the two bucket method as prescribed by Scotsbob and others.

    Depends really.

The Cefiro, which I'm trying to preserve and keep looking nice, goes to a professional valeter who uses the two bucket method and everything, costs me about £40. Expensive but I think it's worth it.

The works Mondeo which I don't give a damn about gets a Tesco Value £4 automatic car wash at some point after I get annoyed about getting filthy hands from the boot handle.

    NEVER NEVER USE A SPONGE!!

AND NEVER USE T-CUT on SCRATCHES

Instead always use a lambs wool mitt

Yep, the EE guys at the hand car wash at our local Tesco do a fantastic job, £7 here though, but well worth it.

They are all gone now from my local Tesco as they were fighting with each other in the car park.
  • there was a feature on fifth gear i believe about this - actually auto car washer came out fine. basically they said should be ok as long as you don't use anything that will "drag" something along the surface - i.e like the brush on a jet wash - notice that everyone puts it on the floor!!!

even brushes can scratch cars and also some people dont recommend even use a sponge but a microfibre glove or even better lambs wool glove. I use a lambs wool glove myself and have used sponge on rare occasions but I always do a pre wash first with a pressue washer or hose pipe

Detailing world is a great site to read.

I wash my car inside and out once a week. Even the engine bay gets detailed :)
