I had a bad experience. When I was doing it, there was a minimum order level of £x and if you didn't hit that, then you didn't get any commission. I'm not sure if it is still like that or not.

I was given an "exclusive" area, but the street had already been covered by someone else so it was difficult to find any customers. I asked for a bigger area and was given some aged miners cottages. Most of these were old ladies who only ordered the odd soap or bubble bath, but liked to chat to me for ages so it was very time consuming. Again I just wasn't getting enough orders to make commission. The area manager said there were no more streets nearby that I could have, so I should just redo the streets I had been given.

Even though you don't earn any commission, you still have to buy the books, bags and stationary. Most campaigns, I ended up out of pocket, so I packed it in.
Here I go again on my own....
  • I did it a while ago and stopped - it was costing me more money than I was making. The area manager told me I had a difficult area anyway but I was determined! I now get brochures through my door but rarely buy and then another rep will post a book through my door - I've had 3 different reps in the last 5 months. In this day and age, I think doorstep selling is not the way to go especially as people can order from the internet now and with the credit crunch people would rather spend their money on other things rather than expensive anti ageing cream.

As others have said, you buy stuff and don't need any more for a while, so you might sell a lippy but the customer won't buy again until they've used the lippy (assuming they like it!)

I used to think that the Campaigns came out too regularly as 3 weeks after one another one would come out, people got fed up with them and asked me not to deliver them any more.

However, I did make a little money through doing Avon parties. I used buy their goods at the Rep's rates or the sale stuff and went on one of their beauty courses and gave mini facials at the parties and sold a bit of stuff then but rarely got other bookings or repeat sales.

A lot of hard work for little money and I didn't really cover my initial outlay.

It is still the same that you have to sell a certain amount before commission.

  • I looked at earning bit of extra cash through Avon, but the above mentioned problems put me off, as did the high set up costs of some of the other party plan companies. I ended up going to Usborne Books, and I have never looked back! The product is fantastic and practically sells itself, the commission is guaranteed regardless of how much or little you sell, and there are no targets or pushy people telling you what to do and driving you to get more and more sales (another thing that put me off other direct sales companies!)

I now, 6 months after I joined up, have a team on 13 other mum's working for me on a part time basis around their families, and many of them have become good friends. I would thoroughly recommend Usborne to anyone looking for a fun and flexible way of earning a bit of extra cash. And at the moment, as well as being able to get your start up costs refunded, you can also get a £35 bundle of books and then an additional £75 bundle of books for your kit (for free!) based on your sales, so you can join for nothing, and get over £200 of books to kick start your business!!
  • I worked for avon many years ago when i first left school to get some extra cash but I didn't last long!

I had the same problems that others have mentioned really. It is hard work, you have to be prepared to go out in all weathers, you do get some difficult customers, most often you are sent the wrong items etc

If I was earning a decent amount of commission then this would have been barable but for what I was getting it just wasn't worth it.

You will spend hours dropping off books then you get the books back and then there are no orders so a month wasted when you get no money at the end of the day.
  • Hi, to all! I am an avon representative from Greece. I love avon products i consider them as fair price to high quality. Still i seriously thinking, if it is worth it afterall. When i had my order delived many times, items where missing. Ok, i know this is common, but when i tried to contact them pointing out to them, that they have to deliver the missing items, they replied that the missing items will be deliverd only when i make a new order. So how am i supposed to deliver the avon products to clients, and afterall, i am obliged to make an new order that i dont have, so i just say to my clients, sorry some of your items are missing, this is so wrong, and makes me and my clients very dissapointed. I tried to contact them many times saying that i will be missing for vaccation, and this is not my fault, because the products were in stock, and they just didn't put it in the package, but the answer was the same. I just can't understand the politic of the company. Does thiς happen to your country with avon i really wanted to know ????

to make £200 a week after tax you would have to bring in over a £1000 worth of orders a week and you would still need to pay for the bags and books, if you think you can do that, then yeah it's a great job, I know women like makeup but £1000+ a week worth of orders just for £200 before tax and petrol etc :rotfl:
