Your thoughts please on being an Avon Rep?

Hi there,

I am trying a few different avenues at the moment on making a bit of extra money and though about becoming an avon rep, I have a lady coming round on friday to discuss this with me and to possibly sign me up. Just wondered has anyone done this before, how successful were you, how much time did you have to put in to it, pros and cons....etc... Any advice or information would be really welcome..thanks in advance..
Also applying for Virgin Vie and Mini IQ..Any thoughts on these most welcome too...

I took up Avon when I first moved to my current area. It was a great way to meet new people.

I would say that it is quite time consuming and that alot of clients are only available in the evenings. How profitable it will be entirely depends upon the area you get. I was lucky mine was good, but other's weren't so lucky and sometimes made nothing at all. The other thing is not to be tempted to use all your earnings in the discounted Reps book. I did mine along time ago, and we used to have to buy our books, I presume you still do. I used to buy half the books I needed and re-use them, splitting the round in two. Of couse, this made it longer, but cut down on the outgoings.

Of course, you can always let your friends, family, children's friends parents know etc. Maybe leave a book at local nurseries etc, or attend fetes and sell your excess stock donating a percentage of your sales to the school.

Local Avon reps are sometimes difficult to find, so there would be lots of avenues to make extra income if you are prepared to network your local area initially.

Wishing you all the best with it.

i used to do avon years ago, you have to buy the books/paper bags and ordering slips then go out and try and make a round for yourself.you literally end up walking for miles in all weathers delivering books and then have to repeat the walk to pick up the books if people havent already thrown them out! then do the walk again to deliver the orders. people buy from the first few books then it kinda dwindles as the novelty has worn off and they already have bought what they need. i did make a bit of money from it and it certainly kept the wolf from the door but by god do you work for your money! also with the advent of the internet i would imagine it would be even harder now to flog your wares than it was before. if i were to do avon nowadays i`d be tempted to buy a wholesale load of handmade cards from ebay and carry them in a wicker basket and sell em for a quid each whilst i was delivering orders to try and make a bit extra on top ;) if you are at their door anyway it wouldnt hurt to ask would it! ;):D
proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance! :p

I did it twice a few years ago. It was a good bit of extra cash, but you have to be prepared to go out in all weather to collect catalogues etc, and catching people in sometimes to deliver orders was a pain if there were no phone numbers etc, but on the whole it was fine.

Hi i do avon now and it is quite easy money providing you don't spend your profit,
At present you recieve 20% of orders up to £73 and 25% of orders over that, you have to pay for your books, any bags and samples. for it to be really profitable you have to get a good client base who order reg.
    hope this helps

i used to do avon and it was the biggest error i had ever done sending out the wrong items, not sending out the items i wanted, sending out items i did not want, adding amounts to my bill i never got. also i had trouble getting people in or getting them in and then they say they never ordered the item, or you could be given a route someone else as got or they used to nick your books and orders. so no i would not touch them again
  • My OH dabbled with Avon and quite a few other party type sale things when the kids were younger. I was the eternal cynic about these things and always believed she should get a proper job! About 5 years ago she started doing Pampered Chef Shows and I have been made to eat my words ! For her , and us it is going very well.

As I said to her in the early days ...... knock on enough doors and some will open!

    Ello there will1974,

I saw this convo and had to say when i did the avon less then 2yrs ago it was a complete NIGHTMARE! lol

They NEVER send the whole of your order leaving you feeling like a nobby cause you have to go to peoples house's who ave been waiting for this stuff and explain you dont know why it didnt turn up and you dont know when its going to turn up

This happened to me for 4 months and after less the 1/4 of my xmas orders came I sent the lot back and quit...
But a nice late xmas gift from avon was a letter from a solicitors saying
"you owe avon £30 odd quid!"...
I rang avon and was highly suprised to be told that
"I had failed to send back the items from the xmas round"
I couldnt believe it I told them i still had my returns book with the drivers signature and id send them a photocopy.
Which i did..didnt hear nothing for 11months..so assumed it had been sorted...then i got ANOTHER letter from the solicitors telling me i know owe avon DOUBLE what they said the last time, plus fee's!!!!

By now I was absolutly going nutz.
Rang avon to then be put on hold for over 45mins as per usual.
When i finally got to speak to someone other then that annoying robot woman I said "this is it im going to speak to citizans advice about your harrasment" and was told to send another copy of the returns book to them as they never got my 1st one (hummm funny that cause i sent it back at the PO and got proof of postage)
Anyway that was the last i heard from them.
God help avon if i ever get anymore letters

Oh and i'll tell you what killed it for me...
my manager woman who come round to sign me up...asked me
"not to quit..carry on for another few months because she wanted to win a free holiday from avon for the highest earning round manager
How cheeky can you get..i'll work my pants off in freezin cold weather..gettin abuse from customers fed up with not getting there orders so SHE can go on holiday!.... I think not

Sorry for going on but they put me through all that when all i wanted was some extra pennies for my little girls xmas prezzies...and to this day i've had no apology.

Right..rant over I feel soooooo much better now lol

  • I have a friend who does Avon and where we live she really says it's worth it. I think it depends on the area you get as I dabbled in Avon when I was at school but didn't live in a good area for customers.

Like all these things it's what you make of it and you'll be successful in whatever you enjoy - and that would be my top tip, find a company that you are interested in and you believe in their products. I have dabbled with a few companies in the past and have recently joined Pampered Chef which I wish I discovered years ago as I really love their products, I like the Party plan model and enjoy the fun evenings and especially like all the freebies I'm getting to demonstrate, it suits me.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

  • Hi i was talking to another rep in work today and she told me avon are
now making their commision rate 30 percent for reps instead of 25 percent?
