We went to eat at a pub recommended by Sugarvine in Lancaster. It was closed and locked up. Pub on opposite side of Glosson Dock was great but not what we planned and the Smokehouse (behind closed pub) sold delicious Morecambe Bay shrimp etc.

You don't need a licence to sell soft drinks. I don't know of any restaurant that doesn't serve drinks.

    This is a complete non-sequitur.

I never suggested that you did.

Why would they allow people to bring there own soft drinks. The restaurant will make money from selling drinks.

Can you please try and understand what I said and how it differs to the replies you keep making?

I said I hoped the OP did not leave a tip because of the harassment from the manager.

Your reply did not relate to that at all, mentioning drinks licensing.

I don't care about the rights and wrongs of what the restaurant does or does not allow you to bring.

I am concerned that they stated one thing and then, not only reneged on what they had said, but repeatedly bothered their customer, despite the fact that she had accepted their ruling on allowable drinks.

not the misunderstanding about the BYO - which, BTW, you were perfectly entitled to interpret to mean what it actually said rather than the interpretation of the smartarses here.)

That is the bit I was talking about.

    OK.

And do you now understand that if someone says that you can bring your own drinks your are entitled to read that as 'you can bring your own drinks' and not 'you can bring your own alcoholic drinks'?

It's not a difficult concept to grasp (although you seem to be having some trouble with it); if your policy is that people can bring their own alcoholic drinks then you are perfectly entitled to say; 'you can bring your own alcoholic drinks'.

It's beyond stupid to say 'you can bring your own drinks' and expect everyone to magically understand that you are only talking about one, unmentioned, category of drink.

Don't most places say BYOB eg bring your own booze, or bring your own bottle? If you don't specify exactly what you mean you'll always have trouble. As although most people would assume it only means alcoholic drinks there will always be a few that don't.

I would have just ordered tap water if they were being difficult

In many of the BYO restaurants I've visited, there's been absolutely no problem at all about having our own soft drinks. Our favourite one DOES have a licence, but still is happy to allow customers to bring their own alcohol and soft drinks.

For a family birthday last year, there were 8 adults and five kids eating, the kids had their own soft drinks and the adults wine or beer...no problem at all.

All I'm saying is that if this particular restaurant had not wanted to allow customers to have their own soft drinks, they should've specified in their ad that the "Bring Your Own Drinks" headline referred only to alcoholic drinks.

Most people would know that it meant alcoholic drinks. If a restaurant said byo I would take that to mean they did not have an alcohol license.

How do you know that? Anything to back that up?

So what? Believe it or not restaurants do not exist solely to cater for you.
