Cannot access my router's HTML interface

I was viewing the pages of my US Robotics 9108 router earlier today. I refreshed the ADSL stats page and it came back with a part formed page. That is, it didn't have the USR corporate red at the top, no logo, no navigation bar. In fact it returned part of the stats table, but in Times New Roman rather than Arial which it normally uses. Having refreshed it, it returns "The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." in Firefox. This happens on both PCs and both are connected via network cables. Access to the internet is still available, and I am also still able to print across the network to the other PC which acts as my print server. I have tried Firefox and IE on both machines, to no avail.

It did this the other day (that was the first time it did it) and I resorted to switching off the router and back on again.

I can Telnet the router, successfully logging in using the "admin" account and I can do this from both computers.

    router web server has crashed? Unlikely though. You could try telnet again using port 80 to see if you get a response.

    How old is the router? (Maybe it's on it's way out)

    How long had it been on before you tried the web interface? Was there much network activity going on? (Maybe the routing table was full, and/or the RAM was all used up).

    You could always do a factory reset, and reconfigure - not too dificult - is there a firmware upgrade?

    Thanks.

    I typed telnet 192.168.1.1 80 at the DOS prompt. Is this right?

    If so, when executed, the screen clears and the cursor flashes in the top left corner and that's it (nothing else on the screen). It's been like that for the last minute or so.

    Correct.

    Press Enter a few times, possibly need Control-C as well and you should see something like this which proves the router is responding on port 80 and the problem lies elsewhere:

    :

    <html>

    <title>400 Bad Request !!!</title>
    </head>

    GRM: Nothing. Pressed enter and it moved the cursor down. Tried Ctrl+C. After a couple of keys have been pressed it returns to the DOS prompt.

    It doesn't return anything, let alone html code such as the example you've given.

    Thanks.

    I've reset the router and its HTML interface is now working again.

    I wonder whether this is a sign that it is on its way out or whether there are some set of circumstances that have not been encountered up to now.

    For example, the Reset button on the ADSL stats page has been pressed many times recently (due to another issue I'm having with slow speeds due to bout of high errors).

    Presumably when it serves the ADSL stats page, it has to get the figures. Maybe there is a bug where a particular value causes it to crash. It did crash, seemingly whilst serving the ADSL stats page.

    Does this sound likely?

    GRM, you did say it is unlikely to find that the in-built web server has crashed, but it appeared so.

    Glad it worked.. I am not sure that all routers have the ability to respond to the telnet facilty, for example my Netgear responds as your Robotics does. Secondly it is possible that something in yr router was changed, either in error, by via a corruption. Hopefully by resetting it you'll be okay. If its any comfort had a similar problem with a Linksys wag160n, been running fine since.

    Thanks robmar0se. You asked about a firmware upgrade; it is up to date.

    At the beginning of this year my exchange was upgraded to ADSL2+ so it was the first time that it'd ever run in that mode. For nearly a month I had to run it G.DMT because, despite connecting in 2+ mode, it wouldn't allow me access to the internet.

    It was nearly the end of January when I tried a friend's router and it worked fine. This confirmed that the problem was the USRobotics.

    I was about to resign myself to having to replace it when I did the last thing I could; upgrade the firmware. I was much simpler to do than I anticipated. The router's html interface has a button that you press and it checks to see if there is an update which there was. There was no need to traul USR's website for the firmware!

    Within 10 minutes I had updated it and it worked in 2+ mode! Why didn't I do that sooner??
