Tunisia or not ??

I went to Tunisia few years ago - I can see why people don't like it, but I was fine.
I wanted to go somewhere warm, but a bit different from the usual Spain or Greece. We did a two day tour of Tunisia where we visited the Colosseum (where Gladiator was filmed), an areas where Star Wars was filmed and in the evening a desert ride on a Camel in the Sahara. However, we did this stuff before we had children!!!!
How about one of the Greek Islands as they are child friendly enough?0 -

We did the 2 day Safari with my daughter when she was 4 and was absolutely fine, to me Tunisia has a bit more than your usuall Med destination, you can spend all 2 weeks of your holiday on the beach or lounging round the pool or you can go out and explore the rich history and abundance of ancient ruins and to top it all Tunisia is cheap.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

Yes, me too, even my mum, even though we were with my dad. Maybe they don't harrass women who have children with them, but they certainly harrassed us non-stop, awful. My dad could have had a whole camel farm after the first week.
As for the theory that it must be because women for there to meet Tunisian men, seriously? They're not exactly good looking are they.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I suppose everyone has a different experience and I do not go out of my way to bring a place down, that's why my first post was to the point. I was trying to be diplomatic, but here is my experience.
I went there with just my daughter who was 10, I was in Sousse, I ventured down to the town by taxi hoping to book a boat trip, a man grabbed my daughter by the arm and pulled my daughter across to his horse drawn carriage and pushed her in, when I lifted her back down he spat on my feet and said something in Tunisian which I am sure was not complimentary. When I went for a massage at the hotel, a man burst into the massage room and started shouting at the masseuse while I was naked on the table, there had been a mix up, I had paid in advance at reception, he wanted cash, I was very embarassed by this.
I am no shrinking violet and I am well travelled and far from niave so decided to try again, this time went shopping in the souk, I was followed by two men, I checked they were definetly following me by using the stop/start method, and as soon as I could ran down to the taxi rank and back into a taxi to the hotel. A waiter at the hotel kept referring to my daughter as a little something that sounded like "peach" , I was told by a rep he was saying b11ch. Another waiter pestered me constantly to have drinks with me and "jiggy jiggy" only stopped when his boss had a word with him after I complained. Whilst beside the pool in my hotel I witnessed an English woman of a certain age going into the pool house where they kept towels with a life-guard and they came out about 10 minutes later and had obviously not been playing tiddlywinks, there were kids around for goodness sake.
As I said it's not all bad, we had a wonderful trip out to see the light show in the desert at night and I bought a fantastic handmade carpet at a government run factory and the camel ride was an experience as well. Lots of people were friendly the women we met were lovely and my daughter loved the fact that every second person gave her oranges, but I had learned my lesson about venturing out independently and did not feel I could relax and let my daughter venture where I could not see her. I do not think I will be going back to Tunisia any time soon.0 -

I loved Sousse in November on a girls holiday and would love to go back. The beach was beautiful, hotel had plenty to do for adults and a kids club, 3 or 4 pools, the staff were fab and the spa centre was lovely (say no for a couple of days and they reduce the price). We were AI and didn't need to spend anything.
I would recommend at least a 4 star hotel, 5 if you can, and in July you will need air con. If you go to the zoo and it rains, insect repellant is a must. Downside 1, you can get hassle by street sellers and shop keepers, no more so than Turkey and 2, they allowed smoking in the entertainment room. Also, heed the warning about not changing too much money over as you loose too much changing it back.0 -
Our experience too. We also stayed in Sousse in June 2007 with our then 11 month old and 2 year old. All the locals adored our kids and we found more to do than just beach and hotel.MarkyMarkD wrote: »I can't understand that comment at all. We stayed at a hotel in Sousse; it was easy to walk around; taxis are dirt cheap, as are trains if you want to travel a bit further.
We travelled with a 3 year old and enjoyed Tunisia very much.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I went to Tunisia years ago (Sousse) and was hassled more than in Turkey. I had hoped for a sunny New Year and it was the worst weather for years!
One lady with 2 daughters was at her wits end because the locals were round her blond 16 year old like bees round a honey pot! and the 9 year old hated the waiters stroking her hair!!
I found it interesting but I would chose Turkey everytime. I particularly liked Dalyan.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
