Maybe, maybe not, but I would say we are generally all reasonable people.

I buy and sell like a few people still do on ebay.

The seller could have commuincated why the refund was being given. IMHO a neg is not deserved. The seller noticed prior to sending the damage, had the item been sent and you had handed over as a gift, then I think you would be more upset, probably angry that you had handed over something broken as a gift.

I would probably decline the offer to pay again as you required it for a gift and had to make other arrangements. Do a mutual and let the seller relist would be the way I played it.
  • I was wrapping several items for dispatch last Monday morning, picking them up one at a time from the floor, wrapping on the desk, and moving onto the next. As I turned to pick up the next item, I rolled my chair away from the desk slightly, and as as I did so, the wheel of the chair rolled over one of the items waiting to be packed, trashing the box, and cracking the item inside the box in two places.

I immediately refunded the buyer and apologised profusely in a separate message explaining what had happened.

Just saying .... accidents do happen.
