That said, the £500 per month in petrol is killing me and means my new salary increase is worth nothing. Makes me want to cry when i fill up to the top 3 times per week......
If you are really spending £500 per month in petrol and don't plan on changing your car any time soon, then you should seriously consider an LPG conversion.

It will save you at least £200 a month, and will cost you about £1200, assuming you have an ordinary car, so in your case it will pay for itself within six months, which is well within the scope of a 0% on purchases credit card.

That's one of the things i liked about working on the Cab, walk to the end of the path in the morning and then turn the radio on, and i was there. And when it came to time to go home look for a fare that was going my way.

I do 48 miles each way 4 days a week most of which are around the M25, but I leave home at about 5:15 and leave work about 15:30 so I can do it in about 45min-1hr on most days. If I had to work 9-5 that journey would be a nightmare.

This is in no way boasting but I often drive to london and back in a day (from Leeds). Sometimes even further, sometimes 18 or more hrs in a day. I'm self employed working in the media, and this is the norm for an awful lot of us, and the price of fuel is absolutely killing us.

This is not a "regular commute" and there is no way and no amount of money that would have me travelling 450+ miles a day 5 days a week but people moaning about travelling 20miles a day to work just makes me laugh.

I used to do a smiliar commute slightly shorter though setting off from wakefield :D in the end it wasnt practicle so picked up a mon-thurs let and can now enjoy being taken out by clients for dinner and beers.
Would prefer to work in Yorkshire but a 40% drop in pay isnt good.
  • I do 90 miles a day/2 hours - but it is only as it is a temporary job - if it was permanent I would move nearer to it

I once had a 40 minute commute or 50 minutes during traffic. And I hated it. It was having to plan to make sure you're not late, and then at the end of the day when your tired after work you still had to travel a bit before being able to relax.

I think on paper 40 minutes sounds like nothing, but day in day out when you work long hours, in practice it really drains out of you.

I'm now on a 15 minute commute, perfer it much better :)

    Do it!

No regrets* at all on converting my GF's 200SX a year or so ago, saved us a fortune.

*well, the garage did leave a toolbox under the sill of her car when they lowered it back onto the ground, crushing the sill and tearing the welds apart, but not sure that counts.
