How far can you drive to work each day before it becomes too far ?

Just thinking about how a change of commute would affect me, away from public transport and into a car. On the one hand I could easily pick up something from the shops but conversely I'd have some traffic to put up with.
I reckon 30 minutes would be easy but more than an hour ?

If you are on JSA then Job Centre Plus insist on up to an hour if you have a car, which is a joke as at certain times of the day that would get me up to 60 miles without breaking any speed limits who would drive 120 miles a day for minimum wage?I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

Depends a lot on the hours you work, the route in question, and to some extent how much they're paying you. Not to mention your own health.
My partner used to commute 96 miles (each way, so 192 mile round trip) every day back in the glory days of contracting. It was a short contract so not worth moving house for, but she also worked slightly shorter hours to compensate for the commute being 2 hours each way.
I used to do on-site work, so my trip after a full day's work would typically be 2-6 hours before staying overnight and doing the whole thing again the next day. Doing this for six years was murder on my health. I'm still suffering from it over two years later, and I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Neither of us could do commutes like that these days. I'd probably set a limit of about 45 minutes.0 -
I haven't commuted more than 5 miles for 12 years now and I consider myself very fortunate. Used to do 80 miles a day in the 1990's.0

My commute is 20 miles and takes about 45-50 mins each way. It is expensive but I don't mind the timing, it's quite nice to start slowly with the radio and de-stress on the way home.0

I do 35 odd miles each way which takes me an hour. So 70 miles and 2 hours a day total.
It's ok most days but when leaving the house about 7am and not getting in till 11pm some nights it's hard but I live in a rural area and professional jobs are hard to come by.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
For four years I used to do 90 miles each way and a colleague did 130 miles. We both moved closer.
It depends on where you live and the traffic conditions. I suspect there are a hell of a lot of people who spend far more than an hour in the car getting to work every day. Sometimes it takes me more than that to do my 20 mile commute.0 -
This is in no way boasting but I often drive to london and back in a day (from Leeds). Sometimes even further, sometimes 18 or more hrs in a day. I'm self employed working in the media, and this is the norm for an awful lot of us, and the price of fuel is absolutely killing us.
This is not a "regular commute" and there is no way and no amount of money that would have me travelling 450+ miles a day 5 days a week but people moaning about travelling 20miles a day to work just makes me laugh.0 -
I commute 75 miles taking 2 hours each way. If I had to do that every day I'd be a: skint, and b: very very miserable! 2 days a week is comfortable, 3 days is pushing it.
I will never, ever take another job more than 45 minutes away.0
