Home Emergency claims for new quotes

Hi,

I have home insurance with MoreThan and have had 3 Home Emergency claims in last 5 years for storm damage to roof (2 were for roof tile replacements, one for a boiler reset). Other than those I've had no other claims.

Their claims dept told me these do not count as either buildings or contents claims ,but instead are Home emergency claims.

When applying for new insurance quotes do I disclose these claims or not as they are not strictly buildings or contents claims?

No you don't need to disclose them
  • Hello,

I registered for this forum looking for answers to a similar problem. I've made two claims under 'home emergency' cover (both for our boiler), and as a result, MoreThan have sent us a letter saying they won't be renewing the policy. I don't mind this, as I change insurers every year anyway as it works out cheaper that way. My question is; do I need to declare these claims to a new insurer? I was doing a quote with Direct Line, and when I went to declare these claims, there was no option for home emergency, nor was there an 'other' option. I'd rather not declare claims as this will push my price right up, but I don't want to be wrongly insured...

    Thanks

You also need to seek advice on whether or not morethan's refusal to renew (assuming this is your home insurance they won't renew) has to be disclosed when approaching other insurers, as not doing this could leave you with a voided policy come a claim.

Home Emergency cover/claims aren't supposed to affect your main buildings/contents cover. Are you sure it's just the Home Emergency part of your cover they won't offer any longer? this would make more sense. If they are refusing to insure you at all that could cause issues with new insurance.

Some companies offer a Home Emergency cover as part of the main policy.

Most offer it as an additional cover that you pay extra for and this is usually a separate policy that does not impact your claims history.

I seem to remember someone else on the form having this problem with MoreThan when they claimed a couple of times with the home emergency cover that is provided as standard on the policy.

You would be advised to tell future insurers that they have declined to renew the insurance but it depends on the wording of the questions that they ask if you need to disclose this.

If you are in doubt, get your quotes online and then ring any that are attractive - I doubt these circumstances would stop you obtaining cover from a mainstream insurer as most have the home emergency as a separate policy.
