new motability car

i have just changed my motability car and got a meriva 1.4 100ps petrol. i have since done 140 miles in it but it has cost me £35 (6 gallons of petrol) which equals the car doing 25 mpg. i have used motorway as well as round town. is this unacceptable for this car. it hasnt got a trip computer on it so i cant verify its only getting 25 mpg except that petrol guage is flashing when i refill it. its costing more to run than i thought and i was going by what vauxhall claim it supposed to do. can any one advise what steps i can do ? thanks

  • 1 - official consumption figures are a lie in real world terms
2 - was it full before the £ 35 and after then too
3 - new cars can take a little time to settle in
4 - your driving style may contribute to economy or lack of

i have estimated it on when i got car fuel light flashing (empty) put £35 in it then when it flashed again done my readings. i have been really careful when driving it to see what fuel consumption i would get out of it. i hate to see what mpg if i was heavy footed !!lol what car said £14 it would cost per 100 miles to run

That'll be a manual gearbox then? Not automatic or semi-auto or CVT?

Best way to get an accurate measurement is to fill the tank to the second click, reset the trip counter, drive until close to empty, then fill the tank to the second click once again. Compare the trip counter to the amount of fuel you just put in.

25mpg does seem a little low (though it may just be the engine needing to loosen up) but I can't see how that car is ever going to get the 46mpg that vauxhall claim. It's not exactly the worlds smallest car, yet it's got a tiny little 1.4 engine that would seem to be better suited to a smaller car.

it seems the only way i can sort it out is by filling it and doing it that way and checking the mpg . but then what i dont understand is by doing that the car will be heavier and use more fuel because of this? i was hoping to maybe getting 35- 40 combined out of it . i would love some one to say they could get 46 mpg out of it . i only picked it because motability website said 46 mpg combined . the last car we had was 50 mpg combined. if it stays at 25 mpg i cannot afford to run it at that. it seems that round town i'm getting 15-20 mpg and combined 25 mpg. big different to what motability and vauxhall says !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Filling it will only make a marginal difference to mpg. Say 25mpg instead of 26.

It's a new car, they take some time to bed in and you to get used to driving it. Do another test after 2000 miles.

Highlight the problem with a dealership and say you will monitor it and if it doesn't improve you'd like it looked into to check for any faults as 25mpg from a 1.4 is outrageous (My 1.4 2011 Fiesta gets an average of 45.1mpg on combined cycle and on longer runs i've seen it nudge 50+). That way you've covered yourself by raising the issue early.

i will be monitoring the car til monday as the person who dealt with me will be there. i just put another £12 worth of petrol in it today. i informed the dealer yesterday of my concerns over amount of fuel its eating (motability are aware of this ). this excuse of running car in is beyond what i can afford. previous car i had i was putting £40 every 2 weeks. in the 4 days of having this i have put almost £50 and done alot less miles
