Police Raid on rented accommodation

Assuming that the police had to force entry (or were the tenants at home and opened the door when requested) then they might have used an enforcer which would cause considerable damage to the door and frame, or did they get a specialist unit to drill the lock leading to a lot less damage? If it was the former then they would probably then have got a contractor to board the property up to leave it secure.
The o/p's parents might therefore have two bills to consider. First to replace the door and frame then secondly the bill for boarding up the door. The contractor my force uses will not bill the tenant as they are normally very reluctant to pay, so they always send that bill to the landlord.0 -
The door could be the least of your worries.
My friends flat had some 'gardeners' doing something similar and they completely wrecked the place. Holes in the ceilings for extractor fans, the electrics all re-wired for free electricity etc. Cost him thousands to put right. All checks were done but the person who let the flat, sub letted to some Chinese people.0 -
Reminds me of a case where the police tried to claim compensation from the housing trust when an officer was injured "smashing in a door" claiming it had been incorrectly fitted, the engineers report on the door concluded that the officer hit the door with considerable force that had been in fact unlocked, the door had bounced back from the wall hitting the officer in the face with the broken handle.
The claim was met with a bill for a new door, just shy of £700, which they paid... Quietly.. :embarasseHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
You need to end the tenancy and gain possession of the property. See tbs624's post above and/or use rent arrears/end of fixed term.
Use your landlord's association membership for legal advice.
Use the deposit for any damage once the tenancy is ended.
Use the Small Claims Court for any further damage if the deposit is insufficient.
Make sure you get good legal advice - do not just rely on your agent.0 -

sorry didnt know how to get back to this thread found it finally. Can anyone tell me how to find posts a quicker way rather than to search/go through all the posts!
Thank you all for the comments and support.
The tenant is being kicked out next week and he said he will pay all rent up to that date. there are no damages to the door because he actually let the police in and went into the estate agents to say what had happened rather than do a disappearing act! Thank god!
The estate agents vetted them, and blamed us for the property to cause them so much trouble, cheeky sods you would think the agents had half a brain to think they put my parents through this and apologies, we were fuming when they said that!0 -

On a similar erroneous door-whacking note... an ex of mine's family owned a small rural post office - the one morning a week, corner of the front room sort that you got (until recently) in some very rural areas (this was in deepest darkest Somerset). His mum came home from work one day to find the door wide open and a policeman murdering chopsticks on the piano in the lounge... they'd got a silent 999 call from the post office in what they believed to be XVillage... gone off there blue lights blaring and broken down the door - to then get told it was actually a very similarly named village a few miles up the road, and most had gone off there blue lights blaring leaving Captain Chopsticks to stay behind and explain things away when the residents returned home.
On that occasion, since it was 100% police screw-up - they paid to fix the door.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
