Anyone using their wedding cake as dessert?

We're having cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake and they'll be our desserts as well
We're probably going to have a small plain white traditional cake (possibly homemade) as well which we may use to cut for photos and also for the older generation and as an alternative to cupcakes if people aren't keen. If you like my post, please click the THANKS

I was never going to have a fruit cake. I don't really like them and nor does my family. (To be honest, I don't think many people *like* them, its just traditional).
We decided to taste the desserts at the venue and if they were really good then get a cheap 3 tier sponge M&S cake and have dessert and cake. If the desserts were average then get a more expensive bakery sponge cake as it will taste better.
The dessert was so good that we are having the dessert and the M&S cake.0 -

and I know some of the guests of my parents generation will probably be a bit miffed if there isn't any handed round.
Are any of you using your wedding cake as your dessert if you are having a 3 course meal? And would any of you be miffed if there wasn't any wedding cake passed round at some point?
I would have thought the venue would fit around your timings, it is after all your wedding and you are paying them for their services. If you give them lots of notice then they don't really have any excuse.
We are having a cake of cheese for dessert after the food. This is the only dessert option.
It hadn't occured to me people would be 'miffed' at not having a furit caske served. tbh I'd be 'miffed' at my friends for being 'miffed' and would think that not one of my friends would even be bothered.
I would do what you want and make sure you have whatever cake you want, served whenever you want.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

Quite agree! I never even gave it a thought that anyone else might have any strong feelings about the kind of cake we had! I'll have to ask around, see if anyone was upset to miss out on fruitcake...then scratch them off my Christmas card list

We are still in the early stages of wedding planning, and we have been debating what to do about our cake so I thought I see what all you lovely people think!
OH and I aren't big fruit cake people, and have been toying with the idea of having the venue make us a cheesecake as our wedding cake which would double up as dessert part of our wedding breakfast
The only problem with this, is that my mum is very much for a traditional fruit wedding cake. I understand that some people 'expect' a traditional wedding cake, and I know some of the guests of my parents generation will probably be a bit miffed if there isn't any handed round.
We didnt really want a wedding cake...but went with the fruit one, just to please mum!
We would have much preferred to have had a profiterole stack and served that as the dessert...but were talked out of it...having profiteroles as a dessert followed by the cake....
.......mum really enjoyed the profiteroles, and forgot all about the cake...infact 20 years on and we still have some cake left in a tin in the loft....but no profiteroles everyone ate and enjoyed those on the day!frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Well the venue have their staff contracted for certain hours and split shifts, so would probably have to pay their staff overtime (which we may be liable for) if it ran over. And I know that they don't like it if there is 'dead time', which is what it essentially would be for them if we had the speeches before the meal (plus, our ceremony is 1.30 so we'll all probably be starving by the time we sit down!) Growing up with a dad as a chef, he has often come home much later than usual because the guests sat down late, or changed their minds on the timings of things, or they were stood around for ages waiting to serve the food. I want to make things as easy as possible for the kitchen staff as I don't want them to be moaning about us!! (and if we make it easy for them we are probably more likely to get a decent discount!!) Also, the kitchen will be 3 chefs down as they will be at the wedding!
We are also having a cake of cheese, which will be the cheese board part of our evening buffet. Hopefully they can order this through the kitchen, so it will be cheaper than if we bought it from somewhere like M&S.MFW 2016 #32 £1574.66/£1500:j:j0 -

We wouldn't have all of the cheesecake that will be served on display, just enough to make up 3 tiers (there will be around 100 guests, so I don't know how many cheesecakes that would need!). The rest would be plated up ready, so that the waiting staff can begin to give those out while the rest is being cut up ready.MFW 2016 #32 £1574.66/£1500:j:j0 -
We had cake for dessert and had 6 different types - fruit, sponge, chocolate, tiramisu, orange & ginger and carrot. We had the speeches just after the main and served the cake after.
It worked well for us. The left overs were served with cupcakes and cookies later as we had no evening buffet.0 -
We are having a four tier cheesecake from the English Cheesecake company as our wedding cake and dessert. We don't like fruit cake so this is better for us x0
