Anyone using their wedding cake as dessert?

Hi all,

We are still in the early stages of wedding planning, and we have been debating what to do about our cake so I thought I see what all you lovely people think! :D

OH and I aren't big fruit cake people, and have been toying with the idea of having the venue make us a cheesecake as our wedding cake which would double up as dessert part of our wedding breakfast (my dad is a chef at the venue, so it is a possibility for us). We would have maybe 3 tiers on display, but they would make up plenty for everyone and have this plated up ready. We would probably cut the cake after the main course, before the speeches, so it could be served before the speeches. (we did think about having speeches before the meal, but on discussion with dad the kitchen staff don't like it when people do this as it delays everything for them!!)

The only problem with this, is that my mum is very much for a traditional fruit wedding cake. I understand that some people 'expect' a traditional wedding cake, and I know some of the guests of my parents generation will probably be a bit miffed if there isn't any handed round.

We were thinking of getting a plain iced fruit cake from M&S so we can give some out if needs be, or wait until after Christmas to see if they have any Christmas fruit cakes reduced that we can make ourselves, so there is something to go round.

Are any of you using your wedding cake as your dessert if you are having a 3 course meal? And would any of you be miffed if there wasn't any wedding cake passed round at some point?

We're having our speeches before the meal... as long as they know, they will alter their timings to suit!

But I wouldn't be miffed if there was no cake going around. Its your wedding, have it how you want it!

If you want cheesecake instead of traditional, then go for it!

Speak to your mum and ask what she thinks if her opinion matters to you, and like you say, if you have to, just buy a small fruit cake.

To be honest, I'd just stick with the cheesecake if it was me. :)

We're having a 3 course meal and hog roast for a very good price so was unsure about what to do in regards to the cake alot of people will be staying overnight so thought about cutting it up and leaving some in their rooms?

I'm making a 4 tier chocolate fudge cake that will be used as dessert at someone's (very posh) wedding next month.

My caterer suggested a really nice thing for wedding cake - she suggested each "key" family member get asked to bake a cake of their choice (or yours) and serve them all up on cake platters with labels...I'm asking for a black forest gateau, a lemon cheesecake and then leaving the rest up to them! That way its a bit personal, very afforable and adds a personal touch!

We are having the cake as dessert, we are having 3 tiers, one fruit cake, one chocolate fudge cake, one lemon madeira cake. We are serving this with cream or ice cream. We are also having a cheese cake (real cheeses, stacked in rounds on top of each other) which will be served with biscuits and grapes which is an alternative choice for people.

The cake cutting will be before the meal to give the caterers time to cut it up into portions to serve at the end.

However I also think having cheesecake is a great idea (I love cheesecake!) so go for it!
  • Thank you everyone, you have all confirmed what I was thinking!

OH and I really didn't see the point in spending money twice, especially as we would prefer a dessert rather than a cake. We both rarely take a piece of wedding cake when we go to weddings, and my dad said when they do weddings there is normally loads of wedding cake left over that doesn't get taken away, and gets thrown away!

We will be having an evening buffet, and there was the option to have a traditional wedding cake as a sweet during that - but over the years my dad has become very well known in our family for the chocolate eclairs he makes, and it would be rude not to have some of those - they are amazing, and couldn't imagine my wedding without them!!

If my mum is really adamant on a fruit cake, we can always make one over Christmas and keep it!

If your mum's so adamant about having fruit cake, get her to make it herself! It's your wedding and I think what you have described sounds really lovely.

We are doing the traditional thing with a four tier cake, two tiers fruit and two sponge, and it will be going out with the buffet. I think in order to minimise wastage, they only initially cut up half of each tier so the other half, if not needed, can be taken home by families as a whole.

This would be my old concern...they're going to need to get the cake out to the kitchen, portion it up, put it on plates etc and then serve it to people...If you're not cutting it til after the main, there's going to be quite a wait for pudding...

My sister had a pavalova tower as her wedding cake.
They cut it after the main course, then the kitchen staff were able to serve it all up before the speeches.
