Hello wise forum,
Wondered if you can advise…
I have got a cheap (ie. 99p) potato peeler with handle and wide horizontal blade (a Y-peeler?); the peelings end up having more food on them than the peeled bit left in my hand, which is a bit of a waste! Also tiring to use after a while. (I’m not good with a knife, have attempted, but again it always wastes loads).
Would be interested to know which style you prefer that gets an arduous task done quickly with least wastage? How much are you prepared to pay? Links would be great!
Thankyou x

I used to have a Kleeneze rep come round and their potato peelers were great - but she finished and I bought a Prestige one. and poundshop ones and tbh - the Kleeneze one was the best.0

Y-peelers are best for long, thin veg', like carrots and parsnips.
For short, fat veg', like potatoes, you need one that looks like a knife, ideally still with a swivelling "blade".
Mine came from IKEA, 85p each. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
We've always used one of these, I can't get on with the "Y" type

Personally I'd go with a good old-fashioned straight peeler. The one with a straight blade and twine looking handle (they used to be string stuff wrapped around but my cheap new one is plastic moulded to look like string!) They are easy to use don't waste too much and aren't likely to take your fingers off! I paid about 80p for mine from home bargains over 4 years ago and still works great.

The Lancashire peeler as posted above by Ich is the type I've got on best with. I find the type with the swivelling blades hard to get on with."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

Yet I tried a Lancashire peeler and didn't find the fixed blade any better than my paring knife. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

Takes all sorts, eh? As usual the answer is the best one is the one you get on with. I had one of those battery operated ones but hated it - my friend with Dupuytrens (sp?) - a hand condition - was very pleased to have it."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

I can highly recommend ThePeelerMan on eBay. He's a lovely seller and so kind. He has a range of peelers and good prices. He always sends a little gift with every sale.

Thanks all, think will go for an old fashioned wire one with swivel blade, hopefully I'll be left with something to eat at the end of it!0
