Y-peelers are best for long, thin veg', like carrots and parsnips.

For short, fat veg', like potatoes, you need one that looks like a knife, ideally still with a swivelling "blade".

Mine came from IKEA, 85p each. :)

I use the Ikea's long bladed one, it's very sharp, I've not used a different one for ages, it's so good I always go back to Ikea when it needs replacing. Excellent value for money.
  • OH uses a peeler that you attach to a finger and it works great.

  • I have a Titan peeler and a Good Grips one, both will peel quite thinly. I find the Good Grips one easier to use, I have `peeled` bits of skin occaisionally with the Titan. My GG peeler is years old but still sharp, the grippy handle is a bonus if you have any hand problems.

I've got an Austware peeler which I bought when I lived in South Africa. It's like a Y peeler except that the handle is wider so is less tiring on the hands. I'm dreading it going kaput - I'll just have to get friends down there to buy me another one! Actually my DH has just come back from there today and I should have asked him to buy me another one to keep in reserve.

:) I favour the kind of peeler which holds its blade horizontally.

I have a "Rena" brand peeler which is a simple all-steel frame constuction and the blade is designed to pivot up to 90 degrees to follow the contours of the veg. Bought it for 10p from a boot fair 13 + years ago and it's excellent on both tatties and long veg like carrots. I've also used it to cut shavings off blocks of cheese for sarnies. "Rena" is a German company.

I also have a near-identical one bought for about £3 in a department store which is a "Rex" brand from Switzerland (Mod Int 11002.) I bought the new one just before finding the second-hand one, thought I'd use the old one up first but it seems to be indistructable. HTH.:) Plus it sits nicely on my magnetic knife rack on the wall.

I went through sooooo many potato peelers that it became a joke and someone bought me the very expensive 'Oxo Good Grips Y Peeler', I have now had it for 8 years and its still going strong and deals with the awkward stuff like swedes/turnips with ease. I think this is a case of you get what you pay for, and I managed to pick up another at the car boot for 50p so don't feel too out of pocket. and as we have 'his n' hers' the spuds are done in minutes !

I have 2 cheap y shaped peelers and get on marvelously with them (as did my sister who was left handed) but my mum just can't make them work, hence why I have 2 - she gave me hers!

She has always used a Lancashire peeler with the fixed blade which I & my sister could never make work.

My nan always just used a knife, so there really is no 1 perfect peeler for everyone.
