It is the user who decides if they are going to make contactless transactions or not.

As you are having trouble phoning and emailing BarclayCard, why not write to them and state:

I will not be carrying out any contactless transactions with this card. If you discover such a transaction has taken place consider it unatuhorised by me, and inform me immediately.

This puts the ball in Barclaycards court. I did similar via a phone call and had it recorded on my file.

This way you are not tampering with the card.

    Hope this helps.
  • A quick comment for any customers of NatWest reading this. I have also been sent a replacement card with contactless payments which I don't want. A quick call to NatWest confirms that you can opt out completely (rather than just never activating it). A new card without the contactless chip is being sent to me.

According to today's Money Box on BBC Radio 4....

The following issue contactless cards and no alternative:
    Barclays
    Co-op
    MBNA

The following will issue cards WITHOUT the contactless feature on request:
    HSBC
    Lloyds
    NatWest/RBS
    Santander

Some others don't currently issue contactless cards at all.

Barclays do have an alternative as I changed my card a couple of months back. Had to go to branch and get contactless card cancelled and new card issued. Old card started 4539 and new card starts 4658 both say debit in the corner.

I don't have any real concerns over the security of contactless debit cards, the only thing to be wary of is the transactions are not authorised at the point of sale so it's very important to make sure you keep a record of what contactless transactions you have made as your 'available balance' will not immediately reflect recent purchases.

Apart from that I love the speed of contactless, it's perfect for small purchases in newsagents etc.

"Barclaycard doesn’t offer cards without the new technology, but Soranno Keating says if enough customers demanded them she would be forced to offer them."

Presumably the same would be true for Barclays debit cards.

It makes things a lot quicker if the newsagent or shop has a dial up connection as a process that could have taken 30 seconds, sometimes a minute if its really slow, is now 3 seconds.

    Hi guys,

I just received my first barclayscard but I really don't want the contactless payment. Could someone advise the exact point where I should drill/cut to remove the chip?

I tried to cut on the same line of the wave icon but I can still read all the info using my nexus 4 :(

Since you are unlikely to place your card next to an rogue RFID reader, I would recommend insulating your wallet against RFID to ensure people don't read your cards without your knowledge.

OH (small local bar) has a reader, so I wouldn't be so sure.

Gromitt's advice is good precaution, though.

i've had my contactless card with barclays for 2 years and love it. i'm waiting for my natwest and co-op cards to become contactless aswell.

although it's never once asked me for my pin over a good few hundred contactless payments, i know i'm covered under their fraud prevention measures anyway if it goes missing, so it's all gravy.
