What type of large file is it? If it's (for instance) jpeg or mpeg then it's unlikely that any zip program will compress it by more than a few percent - I tried this myself recently with 7-Zip and only reduced the size by 1 or 2%. Not sure whether winrar is better at this.0

You can also revisit the probelm by using dropbox, box.com, google drive, yousendit, etc to share the file - the large files live on the server, the email recipient downloads them. This has the advantage of not choking up their mailbox too.
If you really want to zip and send still (there are times when it may be appropriate) then +1 for 7Zip. Free and very effective.0
