Winzipping alternatives

Could anyone please help me with compressing files (eg Winzip type) in order to send large files within e-mail? I'm looking for something which would be universally compatible with Windows systems, and free...

I know that files can be compressed within Windows 7, but wondered how reliable that would be for sending to other people.

Hope this makes sense.

Many thanks

7zip is probably your best bet opensource and good compression.

Depending on how large you files are I would think something like dropbox might be better.

The zip facility built into Windows is perfectly fine. It might not give you the best compression levels possible, but it works well.

    Personally, I prefer 7-zip.

You would probably be better off uploading the files to a free file host such as media fire if he files are fairly big because there can be limits to the size of files sent via email. You could email them and the person who receives them might not get them due to the size. You could email the file host links to the person you want to have them.

    Another vote for 7zip.
  • 7zip is good but i much prefer winrar for any sort of compression of files and emailing them. Just make sure the person you have sent it to has winrar also

Winrar is a paid program, if you want. Otherwise you can run it as a demo effectively all the time (rather than time limited).

For sending large files, we're talking 20+ megs i winrar. BUT make sure the receiver can get the size of file you're sending, and that they actually don't mind.

Would echo drop box for most easiest, you upload, they download.

When sending large files be aware that many mail systems baulk at attachments over 10mb so it may be better to make a split archive and send each bit in a separate email.

    I use ZipCentral http://zipcentral.en.softonic.com/

You can split the file or create a self extracting zip file.

If it is a large file then I recommend putting it on the web; either your own ISP web facility or one of the many file storage facilities.
