An mot failure?
Hi, could someone pls tell me if a damaged side skirt is an mot failure. I scraped the entire length of the side skirt on a rock and it is dented in and badly damaged. (there is no damage to underneath of car, or car doors). This is further complicated by the fact the side skirt is not a seperate piece on this car (peugeot 307 sw) and so cant easily be replaced.

If you tape up any ragged edges so that it is of no danger to pedestrians or other road users it should be fine.0

agree; assuming the side skirt is plastic it won't be structural ; it mustn't present a hazard to pedestrians so no sharp edges or points showing and you'll be OK.The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Do you have a picture as the 307 SW doesn't appear to have side skirts as standard.
If you mean the bit below the door (sill/rocker panel) and it is severely damaged it will probably fail as it is structural."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Ok, i see what you mean, it cant be side skirt, it must be the sill. iv taken it to a bodyshop just now, and they said they could attempt a repair for £700, or to replace it would be £1500 - £2000. Do these prices seem right? I could claim on the insurance but as car is only worth £2000 - £2500 im worried they will write car off, and I really like the car so dont want to lose it. I dont care about cosmetics so if it will pass mot I would leave it. I just dont know what to do.0

if it is only dented and not actually got a hole anywhere then it is pass and advise assuming its not distorted to seriously reducebody structure
i suggest you leave it and let mot man decide0 -
As said, so long as its nothing structural you have damaged you should be fine. Parts are expensive, you can be looking at £200-£500 for the paint alone so those prices don't surprise.
If you have a friendly local garage they will have a quick look and tell you their opinion on that I would think, I know ours would.0 -
You can always take the easy option if it fails and get an over-sill put on then spray in yourself.Never Knowingly Understood.

Spot on Patman, back when cars rusted before electric or computer failures scrapped them we regularly got a handy fella to weld new sills wheelarches etc on to keep them MOTable.
£2000 is ludicrous, if i showed my welder mate that quote he'd spill his beer.
By the way i see lots of Pug 307s with stoved in sills, is there something i don;t know?, i don't like the way they feel on the road, always seems like you've got 4 slow punctures such is the instability..0 -
Thanks for all your replies, I think ill get rid of any sharp edges, and just hope for the best, mot not due till December.0

I had three largish plates welded onto one of mine for it's MOT, rust behind the oversill, £100. Dented isn't a fail, so long as there aren't sharp holes torn into it.0
