Changing Insurance

I have just had my renewal quote in from the AA and was shocked  at the quote. Even when I spoke to them they couldnt get anywhere near middle of the road prices I saw on the comparrison site.

In the end I went for directline which was about £200 cheaper and just a bit more than the cheapest quote I got.

I was told that I could send my renewal letter as proof of NCB. Is this good enough for proof if it is mentioned?

Also do I have to do anything after cancelling with the AA? I just did it over the phone and the lass was nice to deal with but couldn't do anything on the renewal.

Yes, but I would talke a scan or photocopy in the unlikely even it gets lost in the post.

There is a chance the lass might forget either accidentally or on purpose.
If I do it over the phone I get a name, date and time, then potentially recorded calls can be checked, but in my experience if someone knows you have your name they don't try any funny business.
You could write or send an email if you are worried.

    All looks fine to me.

If the Renewal Invitation states how much NCD you have make a photocopy or a scan of it and send the original to Direct Line.

I'm sure the AA have done the correct thing but in the future I would steer away from using the word cancel. Technically you are declining the renewal invitation. There have been instances on these boards of people wanting to decline the renewal but have said cancel so the policy is cancelled from today leaving a gap of no insurance and possible cancellation fees. Declining a renewal invitation is free.

Thanks. I have been with the AA for 4 years so moving to someone else is new to me, granted is something I should have done last year but didn't.

I will make sure I scan/photocopy the document so that I have proof.

The directline lass mentioned that she tried to check the system for my NCB but couldn't find my name on there so I have to send in the hard copy.

The word you are looking for is "lapse".
Ben is quite right you have to be very careful what you say to call center operators especially foreign ones (no racism intended just highlighting language issues).

Do you have an automatic renewal on the AA policy? It should tell you on the renewal letter.

Maybe you should have a look at this thread.

If you didn't get the name of the person that you were speaking to you could ring back just to check that the policy has been set to lapse. Get the full name of the agent and make a note of the time and date of the call. You can also confirm in writing that you wish to lapse the policy.

It's all a bit of a faff but if you have automatic renewal you want to make sure that they are not going to renew the policy and take your money.

If you don't have auto renewal the policy would lapse when they did not recieve payment but it does not do any harm just to confirm that you are not renewing.
