Write them a letter stating you instructed them not to renew, and tell them you will refer them to the FOS in they charge you anything for the unwanted renewal. If they have charged, tell them you expect a full refund. Also state the car is now sorned.If they don't agree, refer the complaint to the FOS.0

Ask to speak to manager or to be put through to their complaints department.
Insurers are required to keep recordings of all calls (for several years I believe).
As regards to the 14 day cooling off period, this may only apply to new customers who have perhaps taken a policy out over the phone without seeing the full policy documents but this can vary.
If the car was sorned before the renewal date, do you have anything to confirm this? I don't know if the tax people send you anything to confirm this. If not, perhaps you could request this and it could possibly help you.
In any case, it seems harsh that you would have to pay the full year's premium (presuming that there have been no claims since the policy renewed on the 12th - unlikely if the car was off the road!)
You would usually be entitled to a refund less a charge for the time on risk and any admin or cancellation charges but you would need to check the terms and conditions on the policy.
If you don't get anywhere on the phone, put the complaint in writing and they will need to respond within a certain time frame - might be 14 days but I'm not sure.
