Keyboard too small on my first android phone

Afternoon all. My dd has just organised my first Android phone - an HTC Desire. The keyboard is driving me mad (I'm a bit technologically challenged anyway but could cope with my old Nokia!) I see there are apps for keyboards - would anyone be able to recommend one which would be easier to use? Feeling very frustrated as can type on a keyboard on computer very quickly but the phone is sooo slow!
Thanks in advance.

Swype keyboard app is very popular: http://www.swype.com/

    Also:
    • QWERTY keyboard gets bigger in a landscape format if you turn the phone,
    • You can switch from QWERTY to a classic PHONE keyboard with three symbols per a key or a COMPACT one with two symbols per a key.

Thanks for this. It does seem to be easier if I turn it round on to a landscape form. Now to get to grips with everything else!

Swiftkey is my favourite as it predicts based on your texts.

My personal favourite is Cooltek Touchpal. It has a number of layouts and the ability to slide down for symbols and up for uppercase speeds up my typing. You can even enlarge the buttons to an extent if necessary.

Just to say thanks for all suggestions, which I'm hanging on to! I will get to grips with this phone!
