Got several more quotes which ranged from Safestyle (£1300) to local firms at £1400, £1800, £1850 and over £2000.

Have gone with the local firm charging £1400. An OK looking price and they also took the time to explain how they would re-render on the front of the house (since it would be disturbed when the old frames were removed).

The wall above the kitchen window is bowing and new lintels had to be put in over the living room windows last year. I mentioned this too and the chap said lintels are only £10 or so (which I know to be true) and they would put one of those in if necessary.

I've heard quite a few dubious things from the various chaps who have been out to give me quotes. One is that you need toughened glass in a kitchen window? A second that you need toughened glass on a roadside wall. And a lot of talk about A, B or C ratings. (The new windows will be A).

I've also looked at an awful lot of sample windows and there has seemed very little to chose between them. Same multi locking system, same way to have it open very slightly but still locked etc.
Kitchen could be toughened depends on height off the ground inside or out. is it a window door combi or high risk area ? roadside ?? is it direct onto a roadside or pavement ? upstairs or down etc ? again could be .so not dubious unless its not needed . A & B rated you will never know the difference as there is very little between them and if both are properly fitted you will save about 8p a week more in bills with a frames(compared to b with similar like for like glass)

Just wanted to update people - Safestyle have been out fitting the windows today and I'm very pleased so far. The two fitters have been excellent - friendly, polite, knowledgable and good at what they're doing. They've also made a great effort at tidying up afterwards too, which my wife will appreciate!

The finished quality is great too. For just over 2 grand for a composite door and 4 A-rated windows, I can't complain.

I'd certainly get them back to quote for the back of the house next year. Again, I'll get a couple of quotes first and ask them if they can beat it - no messing around with 3 hour sales pitches, either a yes or no, then I'll be fair with them too.

Safe style are normally ok once you get to the fitters . Its the !!!!!! before that make most of the bad reviews . There are many decent companies in west Yorkshire area that could beat £4,8 (without looking at your job or knowing what you have been promised or picked) about £800 cheaper if you shop around

We had some local firms who quoted 3500 and 4000 and for the whole house but we are going with Coral at 4600. Purely because I have received very good feedback from friends who have used them before.

    Their initial quote was 5900.
