4 new window frames

Just watching the rain running through my front windows this morning so am going to get a quote for some new ones!
Safestyle are coming later today to measure up - does anyone know if they're any good?
I'd really like to know what is a sensible quote to replace the following sized windows?
Living room front - 980 x 880mm
Living room back - 101x102mm
Kitchen - about 100 x 100mm (hard to access)
Kitchen back window - 580 x 460mm
N.B Existing windows are absolutely rotten. Thought about getting them repaired but the double glazing is 6mm and they don't even make it that thin anymore! Also, condensation has got between the 2 pieces of glass so you can't see out properly.
Thank you.

What are the odds that they have a "special offer on" and that if you sign the paper tonight you will get a "special discount" and if you don't, you will get alast chance at a very special discount for one day only tomorrow.
Only way is multiple quotes. You have a larger chain via safestyle, find a couple of local fitters and get prices from them.0 -
Called them around for a quote.
8 windows [3 big ones and 5 single ones]
1 front door
1 back stable door
1 patio door
I chose the Eco Diamond Grade.
The guy was slow and spent almost 3 hours in my house.
Anyone after much calculations and phone calls, the final price he gave me was £4880.
I doubt any of my local companies will be come even close to that price as the doors we picked were expensive.
I didn't crack under pressure and said I need time to think.
I will get Coral Windows to give us a quote but I am seriously thinking safe style. The only thing putting me off are the really bad reviews and after sales service.Nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. - Alex Supertramp0 -
£300 - 400 inc vat each fitted by a local independant.
Let us know the quote from Safestyle - I could do with a good laugh!!!

I've read all the bad reviews of safestyle, so thought I'd post up my thoughts.
We want to replace 4 windows at the front of the house and get a new composite door. Windows are white UPVC - 2 at 1800 x 1000, 1 at 1300x1100 (opaque) and 1 at 700x1200.
Following advice on here, I contacted 4 local companies. 3 of them came out and measured up - all seemed reasonably clued up (I'm a building services engineer, so can sort the flannel from the facts when it comes to U-values etc) - quotes were from £2400, £2688 and £2960. the fourth company quoted £2080 over the phone, subject to survey (available with £100 deposit).
Safestyle had done a flyer drop just after we'd moved and I had contacted them initially, then cancelled the appointment (partly due to reviews about hard selling, but mainly because they insisted on both of us being there). Anyway, they contacted me again on Saturday and said they were in the area on Sunday. I agreed, partly as I was interested to see how bad they might be.
The guy was pleasant enough - came out with a fair bit of sense, mixed up with some questionable statements. After telling him I was only interested if they could beat the quotes I'd had already, he spoke to his manager (he actually did - I made him put the speaker phone on!) and came up with £2060 all in. So signifciantly cheaper than the local companies and at least as good quality, if not better.
My only concern now is that the surveyor will come out (next week) and come up with some excuse to not fit them, as the price is too low!
I'll let people know how it goes, but thought it useful to post a slightly more postive view of Safestyle.0 -
Safestyle quoted £1300 for the 4. It looks like it might be cheaper buying in the frames then paying someone to fit them.
Haven't got much further than that!0 -
£1300 isnt overpriced and you can still get 6mm spacer bar units but if your frames are old wooden and finished now is the time to replace . Kitchen window (hard to access) is there a shed in the way ? or down a narrow jigger etc. Most jobs can be taken out ,cleaned, installed sealed and glazed all from the inside.Think and have a look if there could be brickwork replacement problems etc. £1000 is low but right for a local window fitter depending on the make up needed and decent days work. frames and glass would cost me about £650 with one opener and toughened if needed. Welsh Marches can range from north to south ( I used to work for uniglaze in Crewe and shudder when we used to get Marches as the address) could be 40 minutes could be 4 hours.HTH:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Safe style are normally ok once you get to the fitters . Its the !!!!!! before that make most of the bad reviews . There are many decent companies in west Yorkshire area that could beat £4,8 (without looking at your job or knowing what you have been promised or picked) about £800 cheaper if you shop around:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
Got several more quotes which ranged from Safestyle (£1300) to local firms at £1400, £1800, £1850 and over £2000.
Have gone with the local firm charging £1400. An OK looking price and they also took the time to explain how they would re-render on the front of the house (since it would be disturbed when the old frames were removed).
The wall above the kitchen window is bowing and new lintels had to be put in over the living room windows last year. I mentioned this too and the chap said lintels are only £10 or so (which I know to be true) and they would put one of those in if necessary.
I've heard quite a few dubious things from the various chaps who have been out to give me quotes. One is that you need toughened glass in a kitchen window? A second that you need toughened glass on a roadside wall. And a lot of talk about A, B or C ratings. (The new windows will be A).
I've also looked at an awful lot of sample windows and there has seemed very little to chose between them. Same multi locking system, same way to have it open very slightly but still locked etc.0 -
Count yourself lucky. The property I have just bought needs 23 windows replacing, plus 3 exterior doors and it's only a bungalow and not that grand. Should be an interesting time but over the years of doing re-furbs for other owners,I have always used local firms.Only problem I have now is that the tradesmen I have used for the last 30 years are all like me,retired.0
