Mobile phone at aged 9?

My daughter has had all sorts of phones, all courtesy of her indulgent Daddy (we're separated)
At Xmas, she asked for a Blackberry, despite having one previously which was replaced by an Iphone ! I got her one from Asda as her main present and put it on an Orange Sim only contract at £7 per month. She gets 150 minutes of calls and 500 texts for that. I won't pay extra for BBM though, most of her friends have it but i don't see the point, it's the same as texting. Her Dad has just got a new Samsung Galaxy S which she's quite interested in, i'm waiting for the request for one of these now ! She has to show him how to use it !0 -
My DD is 8 and has an iPhone.

I will be horrified if my niece turns up in 4/5 years with a mobile phone! I think that perhaps 11/12 is a good age to start with one, obviously depending on the situation but I wouldn't be wanting to give a young child so much responsibility.
I also think that an 8 year old being home alone for 20 mins in a morning before having the responsibility of locking up the house and walking to school is horrendous. Sorry but what would happen if there was a fire or something in those 20 mins, whilst he may be a responsible kid locking up and walking to school, an adults rationale would go out of the window if there was a fire let alone an 8 year olds.0 -

Children this young don't NEED a phone! I can understand them needing them when they are at high school but primary school children only WANT them because their classmates have them. The best thing you can spend on a child, is time.0

Was it a hand me down or a new one? Sorry just wondering!
My OH's Mum let his 7 year old play with her iphone and gave her the password to download free games (i know, what on earth was she thinking?!) and she ran up a £340 bill buying credits for farm world!0 -

Jeez! I didnt get my first mobile phone until i was 19 years old and yes it may have been a few years ago now (im 33) i certainly didnt need one before then, although i do see why a teenager would have one these days.
It just beggars belief why people feel the need to give their very young children mobile phones when they clearly dont need one.
My son certainly wont be getting one until he is in secondary school and has to go out alone.
What the hell is an 8 year old going to do with an iphone? SERIOUSLY!?0
