The laws about employment changed recently. My daughter was waiting on at 15 but then the laws tightened up and so she got the boot 2 weeks before Chrsitmas and rejoined three weeks later when she was 16. She also did a Saturday course at our local college which was a babysitting course and she did some babysitting.

Around here almost no-body wants to employ anyone under the age of 18 because of the health and safety restrictions.

My son only got his Saturday job because he knew someone who owned a butchers shop and he was 16 and ten months.

Even for washing up jobs you have to be 18 in pubs and clubs

When I was 15 I managed to get a job at the local hair salon. It was a long time ago (I am a mature student :rotfl:) and I think the reason I was allowed the job was because I was only a few months away from my 16th birthday.

It's worth checking out a government website to see the current legislation on working regulations for under 16s.

I don't know why, but i have it in my head that a lot of places will take on people 3 months short of 16- is that to do with the NI number?

Do you or your mum not know any people with younger children you could babysit for like neighbours or friends of the family. I used to babysit for a neighbour. I did babysit for some people I didn't know but they were always put in contact with me by people I did know or at least had babysat for before and my parents always knew where I was going. I only walked to and from the neighbour's house. Otherwise I got picked up and dropped back off again.

If not maybe you could do other jobs for people your mum does know like gardening or cleaning or fetching shopping.

DS1 has just received his NI number (he will be 16 in May) - so he is now writing letters to large companies in the area quoting his NI number, asking for part time work, however I don't think they take on until 16.

    They won't.

I applied for a few positions when I had my NI number before I turned 16 and was turned down for them all :D

in wales you have to have sat your gcse's before places like tesco will take you on. I had my NI number today :D:D:D:D so i will be looking at a saturday job soon. Where i live near the beach we have a lot of chippies, and some of my mates go jobs there just serving, another friend of mine does waitering in a local small restaurant, i am "sticking-up" (skittles that is) every other friday night, £12 for 8-10pm and its a ladies team so i am looked after well. Will be finishing soon though

Well like I said, if you are still 15 having your NI number means nothing, the vast majority will still not employ you.

I am 16, currently self employed and looking for a part time job also. :D
