Can now read the yellow 'pop-up' tags at leisure!

Until half an hour ago I was blissfully unaware:o that you could download and install other browsers on your computer to be used alongside Internet Explorer as an alternative:o :o .

I have just installed Opera (took a couple of minutes) and can now read the MSE thread headings in full without the little yellow tag disappearing all the time! Means I don't have to click on each thread and open but can "browse" the different threads more quickly.

This is probably really obvious to a lot of you techie people but it has come as a revelation to me and I am quite keen to try other browsers perhaps

- any advice please from the more techie minded?

  • Thanks for the links - I'm having a look at all of these. I assume I can install as many as I want to until I find one that seems to work best for me?

I feel really stupid as I'd certainly heard of many of these but didn't realise how easy it was to try them out - all these years I've just stuck to Internet Explorer!

Didn't realise they were all free as well.

personal choice, some feel Internet Explorer is bug ridden and security week (I use it though !! ) firefox is a good alternative and will do almost everything that IE does, sometimes the other browser takes up less memory or hard disk space which is important in an older machine

Hi camn somene explain in laymans what the extra browsers are for?

Many people prefer the look or added functions of other browsers compared to the default Windows' Internet Explorer. That's why they download and use them. There's normally no essential need to get another browser (unless there are safety issues), it's more along the lines of what you prefer to use and find best for you to use.

Before Internet Explorer 7 came out, there was no tabbed browsing in Explorer whilst the Firefox browser for example, had the tabbed browsing function. Tabbed browsing meaning you don't open new links into a new window unless you want to - they can be opened as a "tab" within the same window. It's those kinds of things which many users consider when choosing a browser.

Firefox 2 has a spell checker which is great for forums like this, just like work it checks as you type and underlines words in red

i use firefox 2 (most of the time, and for the spell checker) and opera (for the download manager, and occasionally surfing the net)
