We've all heard about the police checks etc needed to work with kids.
Basically i'm asking is there a register or similar to work with disabled adults and...is there a list of companies who are on this register.

I'm in a slow process of taking over dealing with my mothers affairs and often have to arrange for someone to be in her house to do work, plumbers, electrician etc...i can't be there and as she is very vulnerable (aged & disabled) i've often looked for a list of companies age UK might approve etc.

There doesn't seem to be any way at all of finding a company that is reccomended/experienced/reliable at dealing with vulnerable people and i can't be the first person to want this. I've called & emailed age UK with no joy at all - they recomend I look for registration with a professional body - ie corgi which is no use.

I live in another country from her so word of mouth isn't much good in this situation. Help?

  • Professional Bodies Royal College of Nursing, perhaps look at Private sources if only to look at Qaulity.
Regulations and training is used to decide qaulity here. I think you need to do a lot of homework via google so as to secure best result for your mum.

It sounds like (similar to age UK) your talking about the quality of work - i'm not.
Someone being a qualified gas fitter isn't the same as being trustworthy with a vulnerable person. I'm looking for a body or group or register of companies that specifically means you have been certified to work with vulnerable adults.

I had expected age UK to have a few national companies they worked with - who could promise to send someone 'carefully chosen' when you explained the circumstances, but there just doesn't seem to be anything

Again - have tried & failed.
To be clear - i'm not looking for medical or personal services, but plumbers, gardeners etc...but when they will be in the house and in some cases dealing with money - i'd like to know they are approved in some way - to deal with vulnerable adults.

To be honest, I don't think there is such a list.

I worked with vulnerable people and have never heard of such a thing.

    Good luck with your search!
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

Those who work for care agencies have enhanced CRB disclosures and most will have had training in POVA - Protection of Vulnerable Adults. It might be worth ringing a few agencies and asking for their policies before deciding what to do.

ok i`m with you now, local councils (ours does)have list of approved traders not sure its 100% what you are looking for but its probably as near as possible
i doubt wether any self employed plumbers gardeners etc would go to the hassle/expense of being CRB checked
could a friend/neighbour/relative not be present if its a problem?
