BMW have recently issued a recall for my car to replace all of the ignition coils, as they're prone to failure. However, I've already 2 of the 4 coils replaced as they did indeed fail (first one was in January, second in March).

While Im not saying your wrong could you tell me where you heard about the recall please, driving a similar car to yours and having heard of the coil problem Im rather interested to learn more.

BMW have also issued a recall for faulty cooling fan actuator switches on 1997 - 2005 models. BMW use the same off-the-shelf part as Ford used on the 2005 Focus Diesel.

VAG/Skoda etc are having similar problem with injectors on the 170bhp 2l diesel engine.

They are replacing all four plus wiring loom foc for any one who asks even if they are symptom free. They are also refunding repair costs for anyone who paid for replacements before the problem was officially recognised

Don't really see why BMW should behave any differently particularly as SOG applies for 6 years.

I just checked the VOSA recalls page at http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp, and the last 3 Series recall was in 2009. I can't see any relating to coils.

OP - where did you hear about the recall? My wife has a 318i, so I'm interested in case her car is affected.

I went to the dealer to enquire about a service and they told me about it there. Could be worth phoning your dealer and asking them about it

The VOSA recall list is only for safety related issues, manufacturers don't broadcast when they have built-in a fault through penny-pinching.
